I am think fouled plugs/plug wires and an O2 sensor change. I am trying to get some background knowledge so I can guide her from my desert oasis. How many O2 sensors does this van have, and how is the access for a plug wire change? Thanks in advance

I'm Just Gonna Throw This Out It Does Sound Like Plugs. I'm Not Sure Where The O2 Sensors Are On That Vehicle Sorry. The Plugs Are Easily Accessible. Tell Her To Take It To Wal-Mart And Have It Done If She Doesn't Want To Deal With It. Should Cost About 30 Bucks For The Plug Change.

Ford Focus 2005 - cold start backfire - runs great after 5 mins, when hot

White Smoke out the exhaust, is usually a sign
of coolant & most likely the start of a bad head gasket

At this point your use of the car should be curtailed,
to prevent any further damage

You should not use the car at all, until all issues are
diagnosed & resolved

Plan on using other means of transportation

Van starts and runs fine for about 70 to 100miles than when you slow down will backfire, lose power and stall. Can restart with difficulty, but engine willsputter and backfire. If engine cools completely...

just a guess here but check coil for breakdown check timing and even check plugs wires distributor cap and even catalytic converter if it clogs up it can cause these problems

The backfire may have caused a coolant leak into the engine.
Check for a blown headgasket- look for combustion bubbles in the coolant resevoir (or ask for a coolant system combustion gas check at a radiator specialist).

03 winstar won't start, shakes ,back fires, fires 3times dies.

More than one issue, maybe? Also consider other experts' solutions.

First, it sounds like the EGR valve is sticking open. The exhaust valve is supposed to be closed when idling, otherwise open. It recirculates exhaust back into the manifold; can't idle car very well when the valve is open, but should not cause backfire.

Backfire, is generally an ignition timing issue: the ECM (electronic control module) is responsible for that. Check it / replace it.

Worst case: small break in one of the head gaskets (not likely, but symptom is the same).

Vacuum leak, too???

Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction!
