Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

Cam bearings How hard is it to replace them I have replaced the head gasket, and tried to replace the valve lifters and shims. But when I forgot to label the order of the shims, so now I have 10 identical shims and 2 that are a bit different. Is it possible to find out in what order the shims go in? Pictures and photos would help a lot. By the way, the Camry is a V6, 1998 model. Thanks

Can I replace lifters without replacing the cam?


You could do that, but you may have a worn cam lobe and your problem would not be solved.

Ok 1990 geo storm 1,6 litre dohc replaced water pump replaced 3 valves replaced head gaskets replaced timing belt car wont start any ideas?

The car is really an Isuzu Impulse minus some of that car's more expensive features.
my guess is you drove the this 4EX1 engine until the cam belt slipped. yes> if yes you bent valves.????????????
so does compression exceed 150psi on all 4 cylinders now?
we use the cylinder leak down test in all DOHC .
if not , back to the drawing board.
if yes, the we check spark next, then try test fuel.
when did the engine last run , last week,month , year,?
who did your valves, a real machine shop or kid down the street.
a read shop pressure tests the head ,and warp checks it and
then makes sure the valves are ready for long service.
are the head bolts at 58 ft/lbs
did you use sealant on the 3 cap caps, per the FSM book.
if not , top end oiling will fail. and cams wrecked.

the 1.6l DOHC has no HLA's
the lash on valves must be checked, and this is corrected with SHIMS.

a pro machine shop does the for you,did they:?
when rebuilding engines, its best to read the factory service manual first. FSM so you know the special steps just for this engine.
ISUZU engine it is.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cylinder head or valve cover.
  3. Position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke.
The notch on the crankshaft pulley should align with the 0 degrees mark on the timing gear case. Make sure the rocker arms on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and the rockers on the No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and align the marks again.

  3. The valve clearance obtained on the exhaust valves should be between 0.008-0.012 in. (0.20-0.30mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 (valve lash spring spacer) between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
The rear camshaft bearing caps must be removed to remove the selective shim.
  1. The valve clearance obtained on the intake valves should be between 0.004-0.008 in. (0.10-0.20mm). If not, replace the selective shim by turning the camshaft lobe downward and installing tool J-38413-2 or J-38413-3 between the camshaft journal and the cam lobe next to the selective shim. Turn cam lobe upward and remove the selective shim. Install new shim using the selective shim chart.
  2. When the adjustment is completed, install the cylinder head covers and connect the battery negative cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Hi. I can give you a simple, but time consuming test to do to check your intermittent compression problem. New hydraulic lifters cause a lot of problems until its settled. Remove the camshafts and the hydraulic lifters. Take each hydraulic lifter and put it in a vice(becarefull not to damage them) and squeeze out all the oil in the lifters. Then put them back and replace camshaft and allign timing marks. Check compression ratio. What happens sometimes is that the oil pressure is too high(stuck oil pressure release valve or cold thick oil) and this causes the oil pressure to put so much pressure on the hydraulic lifters, that it slightly forces the valve open. That will cause your low compression as well as backfire through the intake.

Cam bearings


Remove the rocker cover to ascertain the damage done . It may not be bearings but seized valve in the head. To fix cam bearings properly it may necessitate the head removal and machining both the head surface and then the bearings should be line bored to realign the cam shaft correctly. Some Nissan products have the cam bearing housings adjustable with shims to align the holes correctly and if not done will break the cam shaft. IT may be the cam shaft is broken and jammed . What ever it will not be just a case of putting in new bearings until you have the head and bearing alignment checked out by an engineering shop.

Excessive white smoke coming from exaust,and what sounds like a stuck lifter


White smoke usually is from a failed head gasket. The lifter noise bothers me though usually meaning that you have water in the oil, and may have done internal damage to either lifters, cam or engine bearings. Do not drive it and have it checked out immediately. Needing head gaskets is an expensive job but engine bearings etc generally means replacing the engine.

Part requirments for Cam and lifters


Yes you will need the following:

Cam
Lifters
Assembly lube
Water pump gasket
Intake gasket
Timing cover gasket

Lifter removal tool
Puller for harmonic balancer
Cam installation tool/removal tool


I also would recommend replacing the timing chain and timing gears since you are going to have to take the timing chain off anyhow.

You will also need the associated tools to do the job, plenty off rachets, box wrenches and such.

If you are doing mechanical lifters you will also a feeler gauge to measure the valve clearance and make adjustments.

I cant think of anything else off the top of my head.

If you are doing a cam with more lift then I would recommend replacing your valve springs as well, it is easy and it will assure you do not incur valve float. You will have to take the rockers off when you install the new lifters because you have to remove the pushrods. I also recommend you replace the pushrods while you are at it, they are cheap. You will need a valve spring compressor and new valve springs and locks, they are pretty cheap.

Rocker arm failure


Did the timing belt break at one time? Aside from the obvious of it sounding like your son did what mine did and tried to race the vehicle beyond it's abilities if the timing belt broken at one time it may have damaged the valves. If the valve impacts the cyclinder it is possible that it can damage the rocker and cam. When you pull the head off this time have the head re-worked and valves replaced. This should solve the problem.

1997 nissan pickup 4wd, just had timing chain replaced , now have noticeable knocking noise coming from valve cover ? mechanic says need new stack shims on valve rockers ?


Not likely. You have a 4 cyl engine with over head cam. It has hydrolic lifters. If it wasn't making the noise before he replaced the chain, then its something he did...or didn't do. If it was making the noise before, most common reason would be 1 or more lifters not pumping up. If you have a six cyl, no one changed the timing chain, (It doesn't have one!) The 3.0 6cyl has a belt.

Valve adjustment


The EA82 does not use shims. Ticking almost always caused by a failed oil pump to engine block gasket failure. The gasket slowly fails which then allows the oil pump to pump air along with the oil. Replace the "Mickey Mouse" oil pump gasket.

93 festiva engine valve noise


You would have to read the tech manual to see if they are just shims or if the are a hydraulic type lifter. They would actually pump up with oil and hold slight pressure on the cam so there would not be the tappet noise associated with a solid lifter cam. Odds are they got gummed up and started tapping on you. Hopefully you marked the cylinders they came off of and placed them back in the same location on the cylinder head as originally installed. You don't want premature cam failure because of the mismatched wear patterns on the lifters. Good Luck, RAC
