Question about 2002 Mercury Sable

4th starter in 1 1/2 years on a 2002 sable

About 1 1/2 years ago my starter went out on the 2002 sable. It went out again 2 months later. The same mech changed it out for free. 7 months later it went out. New mech changed it and now i just had it replaced for the 4th time. Each time we start to smell oil burning and the starter begins to fail occasionally. Then in a matter of weeks it goes out completely. We just started to smell oil again and we know it will be going out soon. Nobody can tell us the problem. If it is an oil leak, why would an oil leak even affect the starter/solenoid? Are they not sealed units? We have spent over $1000.00 on this nagging problem. Any answers?

Ask the mech to dissassemble an old starter if it is not turned in for a core. If it is an oil leak are you using a lot of oil to keep it up to the full mark on dipstick. The copper windings in the starter may be soaked with oil, and the oil will attract road grime and dirt and be so clogged that the brushes cannot contack windings and clog up the whole works. Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking down onto starter, they may have vibrated a little loose and just need tightened or replaced. Can really be the only thing that would go wrong with the starter, unless your battery is way to small or way to big. Check CCA, Cold cranking amps with the owners manual for replacement battery size.

2002 Sable. Two weeks ago, it will crank but not turn over. Day or so later it started fine, ran well for a week then did the same thing. It has happened twice now, tried replacing the starter motor relay,...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
This is commonly caused by a faulty starter solenoid. If the starter solenoid is faulty it tends to trip during operation. One good reason why it starts and sometimes don't. Have it replaced and you'll be good.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

My transmission went out on my 2003 Sable.

Some repair shops give you a 90 day warranty because the parts they install have that warranty.

Try taking back you car if it has only been 2 months or 60 days. You can make a good argument because of the parts warranty.

You probably have way too much unburned fuel in your exhaust system (how's your mileage?) or possibly a failed oxygen sensor that is giving false information to the computer.

without a fault code its impossible to diagnose. try pep boys or aamco or auto zone they will pull the code for you, usually for free. The code will relate to a sensor or area to be fixed. This will save you money and needless parts . post the code or codes so we can help
