Question about 1991 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Charging problem 1991 Honda Accord, the car only charges when there is nothing turned on in the car. As soon as you turn on the headlight, or the heater, or even the brake lights it stops charging till you turn it off. We have replaced Alternator, battery, fuse box with (eld), main computer. Out of answers looking for a little help please.

I have my multimeter hooked up to the car battery, but we originally found the problem by the battery going dead while my son was driving home from work. The battery light never came on at all, even when the multimeter is saying its not charging.

Thanks for everyone's help. It was a loose belt. The belt never made a noise but I guess it was stretched out so bad that it was slipping. Thanks again!!

While Charging Whats the Voly Reading,??

Have you tried a FULL FIELD Test When The Lights Etc are On

Get Back with Me When after tis TEST

Remove protective cover from alternator end cover. Perform full field test by inserting a suitable tool into full field access hole located on end cover, Figs. 8 & 9. When alternator is in full field, system voltage will rise quickly.Do not allow voltage to exceed 18 volts or damage to electrical system may result. Note tester amperage readings with alternator in full field. If readings are now within specification, replace voltage regulator. If readings are still not within specification, replace alternator

Tough one! Is the alternator belt slipping possibly, did you replace it yourself?? I'd start by looking at that. I'll ask around too!

    :0)

PS. How do you know it's charging when nothing else is on??

How can you tell if it stops charging? Does the vehicle shut off or is it just the guage that indicates that it is not charging, or does the battery go dead?

Possible solution. It could be the belt tensioner. It might not hold the belt tight enough to have a consistent charge to the battery through the alternator. I had to replace the one on my 91 accord and that solved my problem.

Headlights causing battery drain while driving?

Hi:
Though your car seems fine without using the headlights, you have a charging problem, and need to get a couple things checked out. First make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Your alternator belt should also be checked to make sure it is serviceable and properly tightened too. Your alternator should be checked under load, and lastly, your battery too. Most auto parts stores, such as auto zone, will check your parts for free,so you should only be spending money on what is broken!

Does a 1991 accord use r134

Most likely it uses R-12. If it was converted to R-134A, it would have at least 1 sticker (usually 2 stickers) indicating a conversion to R-134A was done. The sticker would be on the chassis and would be visible as soon as you open the hood. There could be another on the low side AC line where the charge valve is.

Car wont start

pretty sure you have a bad alternator, if battery was marginal it may have taken the battery with it...First though, remove and clean the terminals and see if it helps. If it starts, check charging system and have battery tested as well. If you want to do this yourself, post back and I'll help you with it.
good luck

1991 honda accord ex headlight problems

Hello, firstly I was wondering if the lights shut off when you pull the switch off the harness?
If YES, then THAT switch or wiring could be bad
if NO, then it's most likely the body control module

1991 Honda Accord Starting/Ignition trouble

sounds like a bad battery or the battery cables are corroded where they hook up to the battery or loose. if it cranks for a couple seconds slow than clicks quickly there isnt enough voltage getting to the starter. not all new parts are good.

My Car Will Not turn Over

Sounds like you just need a jump. if that doesnt work and the battery is fully charged then you need to disconnect the wires from the battery and clean the cable hookups and the battery terminals. You can go to a auto parts store and get a terminal wire brush cleaner. Wire brush the terminals and the hookup till all the corrosion is off and then put some vasaline on the terminals and hookups to prevent corrosion later. Hook you battery back up and see if it will start.
