2004 Bonneville - Temperature Gauge is Erratic

The temperature gauge in my 2004 Bonneville doesn't read correctly. After the car runs to warm up the temp will read at almost 280. But when you turn off the car the gauge will not go all the way back. Then when you start the car again the gauge will pin out then sit at around 200. Is there are sensor that could cause the trouble or is the gauge messed up?

Mine was doing the same now it is stuck way off the guage pointing to the D on the transmission.

  • ault_kevin Jan 19, 2009

The gauge does drop after ignition is off. However it doesn't drop back to the normal. According to what you are saying, in my case since it does drop after it loses power the sensor is bad?

    Am I correct?

I have the same problem with my 2004 Bonneville temp. gauge. The service center tells me the gauge is bad and you have to change the entire gauge cluster including the speedometer etc.

    Thanks

I have the same problem, both fuel and temp guages are inop. I'm told also the cluster is bad,and am wondering if there is aftermarket guages available that bwill wire in at the cluster?

I need more help with this problem. It seems that my oil press. gauge is going awry now. Am I able to replace the whole cluster from a used car? Or do I need to get a new one. I do know that it must be programmed. I also need help with an issue with the lights going out on half of my fan controls.

Since there is no voltage applied with the ignition off, if the gauge is not dropping down all the way, it is the gauge that has failed.
Temperature sensors are frequent failures but they are not active when the car isn't powered up. They can be intermittant, high, low but with no power, the gauge itself should go to the minimum.

I responded to altogether 5 problems with gauges in your model and year (way too many) and they occurred in the temp and fuel gauges.
If the indicator doesn't return to its lowest point, I'm pretty sure that the gauge itself is faulty.
Once the sensor has no voltage applied, it's out of the circuit and the meter should drop to its lowest point - period.

The sensors are a special kind of resistor; there are two basic types, one with a positive, the other with a negative temperature coeffcient.
This means that the first will increase in electrical resistance with rising temperature, the other will decline in value.
I found a chart as an excerpt from a manual that gives the values for GM and Ford sensors:

    Resistance chart for temperature sensors

I recommend that everyone invest under $20 US in a Chinese digital multimeter available in electronic and auto parts stores.
They are good enough for many purposes around home and auto and come with a Chinglish instruction sheet which are mostly intelligible and will give enough information for almost anyone to use.

With this meter, one can easily check the operation of a number of things in cars including the charge voltage your battery is seeing when the engine is running, the voltage with it off, fuses, resistances and most have a audible signal useful when searching for a short or open in your electrical system.
I have several of these and have never paid over $10 US and have a couple for only $3 bought at Harbor Freight tool stores.

I do not have the complete solution yet. The Coolant sensor is used by the engine computer to manage the fuel ratio for the fuel injectors. The Coolant sensor is also used by the Instrument Cluster for the Temperature gauge. Using my scan tool I am able to see the engine temperature that the Engine computer is receiving from the sensor. It is at a normal operating temperature. Once it reaches 150 degrees, the gauge pegs out. I am almost positive that the Instrument Cluster is the culprit. However it could be a wiring problem. I need a wiring diagram so that I can use my Digital Volt Meter to verify the condition of the wires. I am strongly leaning towards the Instrument Cluster, since my scan tool(Matco Determinator, not a code reader) shows the ECT working correctly. I hope this helps some.

Guages not working,

If all voltages checked ok,then most probably its faulty instrument cluster board on which gauges are connected.Yes if cluster circuit board looks ok,then also it can be faulty.Somewhere there is minute short or burn on board then such prolem arises.
Also check the fuse box.One under hood and other under dash.Inspect each and every fuse and see if all are fine or not.

Engine coolant Temperature gauge fluctuates

Watch the temp gauge when the electric radiator fans come on. The temp sensor that controls when the fan comes on may be faulty.

2000 malibu runs hot if not warmed up

How do you know it gets hot? Are you going by the temperature gauge on the dash? Or have you checked under the hood and found out the engine really is running hot? ...Reason I ask is, something just doesn't sound right in your description. After just 5 minutes from starting and driving away, the engine would not yet be at normal operating temperature. That would explain the heater not yet warm. But the temp. gauge says hot?
If so, I would replace the temperature sending unit on the engine. the one for the dash gauge, and see if that was the problem-not reading the temp. accurately.
Couple of other things: Are you sure you got all the air out of the coolant system? Start the car with the radiator cap off and let it run until the engine is warmed up fully, then shut it off and install the cap. Does your reservoir tank stay about half full where it should be, between the full-hot and full-cold marks?
If your problem persists. I would have the coolant system pressure tested, and see if you could get a true temperature reading of the coolant when it seems to be running hot.
Good luck.

My 01 bonneville oil pressure gauge is showing 120 and my gas gauge is all over the place

HI, the oil pressure sending unit may be malfunctioning at this point. this will cause erratic readings. if your oil level is proper and there are no apparent oil leaks, you will need to replace the oil pressure sending unit. this will fix the erratic oil pressure readings.

Concerning the gas gauge. this device also has a sending unit that sends the correct fuel level reading to the gas gauge via wire transfer. this sending unit is located and attached to the fuel pump assembly inside the gas tank. replacing this device will fix this issue as well.

Please rate and god bless:)

Fuel gauge seems to stick -- irratic readings

I've researched this problem thoroughly as all of my gauges on my '04 Bonneville GXP are producing erratic readings. The only two solutions are to replace the entire cluster which can cost in excess of $700 or replace the six "stepper" motors behind the cluster. Replacing them can only be done by deslodering the old ones and soldering in replacement ones.
