Question about 1989 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Transaxle so I went out to the car and turned it on. As soon as I put it in gear it started making this horrible noise. When it's not in gear it doesn't make the noise. Does that sound like the differential in the trans axle?

If it is the light for brake pads then I'd say replace them as soon as they start making squealing noises. That is if you wish to put it off.
If they make horrible noises then you are doing more damage to other components (rotors) which is much more expensive than the cost of brakes.

98 chevy cavalier manual transmission took it to the dealership and they said I needed a new half axle left side. Took the old one out and then put the new one in and put everything back on and when I put...

Make sure the axle was installed correctly. If you didn't push the axle all the way in it's possible that it's not engaging properly in the splines causing your noise. Am I correct in assuming noise wasn't there before and started after replacing the axle? If yes I would start there. Make sure both inboard and outboard joints are all the way into the transaxle and the hub. Also make sure you torque the nut.

Grinding when turning key on to start ignition

Dodges have a gear reduction in the starter, usually. It could be wearing out. Have it checked out at a rebuild shop.

Horrible grinding while in gear. Will not drive. Rolls in Park.

Failed Transaxle

They only last about 80,000 miles & if you never change the fluid ,
then it's all down hill.

Needs to be rebuilt

Jetta making grinding noises and not moving, but speedo goes up.

check your half-shafts going from the transaxle to the wheel hubs. I suspect that one of them has broken off.

I have a 1994 standered nissan altima... when I turn on the car and rev the engine there's no noise... The minute I put the car in first gear and take off there's a rattling noise that increas

Could be a long list of things.
A mechanic would take a test drive and listen under different conditions.
Causes could include transaxle problems, exhaust rattles, worn motor mounts, even valves in the engine.
The difference in idle and moving is a load on the engine and transaxle and the engine shifting position.

When I was driving my 1996 Geo Prizm at around 25mph, I heard a popping sound and then the grinding started like it was rubbing metal to metal. When I turn to the right, it sounds louder. I had the brakes...

CV Joint went out. since it gets worse when you turn right it is most likely an inside drivers side CV joint or the out side passenger side. The popping sounds was probably the dust boot popping from pressure build up which should make it simple to locate since you just need to identify the boot with a tear in it.

1997 Pontiac Sunfire (automatic) transaxle

I do not know what you are looking at in the manual, but you probably heard a horrible noise when you put it into park, as the parking pawl tries to hold the car in place. Thist usually does not harm the transaxle. If the engine won't start then something else happened, perhaps the neutral safety switch was damaged or knocked out of adjustment. You might try to move the shifter back and forth and then back into park and then try to restart. If that doesn't work try to put the car in neutral to start. If you must have the car towed somewhere the repair should not be expensive, just have them reset the neutral safety switch.

Transmission

Have him ensure that EVERYTHING lines up EXACTLY just right. It helps to try to put the transaxle back in the right spot if it is actually in gear....... he can actually also try to have someone just tap the key to turn it over a bit as he tries to put it back in. This may line it all back up right.
