The light is coming on to tell u that a fault is occurring in the auto transmission controls, most likely a shift solenoid is acting up or a torque converter switch, the reason it goes out is that the trans has to be operated, when it is the system tests itself, if a fault is still occurring the OD light will come back on. Go to a Kragen or Autozone parts store and have them test your system for trouble codes, it is free, then post them back here for me to look at and advise u of a possible repair procedure.

1999 cadillac deville.. oil light came on and the engine shut its self off

The vehicle has gone into self protection mode. There was no oil pressure (hence the light coming on). Check if the engine oil level is correct, if so, you will have to call your dealer to find the problem. Could be oil pump or maybe just a faulty oil pressure sensor.

Why does the engine light appear while driving, and after switching off the engine and restart it is gone and after some time it re appears? Toyota Quantum 2.5 diesel!

The engine light is there to tell you that the CPU has found sensors that are outside the set parameters for safe operation of the engine and gear box. You should run the fault codes asap and rectify the fault . It will then be necessary to use the fault code reader to reset the CPU

Is it hard on the ignition switch to turn the engine off at red lights and road work stoppages?

Turning the ignition switch at red lights will certainly have a negative effect on your ignition switch as well as waste gas restarting.
As far as for road work stoppages, it really depends upon the length of the stoppage. In general, the stoppages do not warrant turning of the ignition and restarting the engine. Just like the red light example, it probably wastes more gas and adds to the cumulative wear and tear on your ignition switch.
Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks.

"Check Oil" warning light comes on at randum

Probably nothing whatsoever to do with you checking the dipstick. On the golf when the warning light flashes, you reset it by opening the bonnet. That is why you think that when you check the dipstick it resets, when in fact it was opening the bonnet. Check your bonnet switch

if you have a pd engine and you say that it miss fires i would change the wire loom to the injectors if it persists the air flow meter is on the blink, has you car ever gone into a limp mode status were you couldn't rev then check your turbo ,this may sound strange but just had a 150bhp tdi which was remapped with a very simular problem

Engine skipping/misfiring, engine light flashing

Drive it into a dark place, or wait till dark. When it's running poorly, see if you can see any spark flying around. It sounds like plug wires.
