1999 ford ranger 4.0

When i first start my truck and it is cold (engine) the a/c compressor thumps over and over like its trying to engage or something. After I shut it off it will continue to thump for several seconds. I'm not familliar with anything to do with a/c's. Anyone have a clue as to what this is?

When your defroster is on it makes your ac compressor kick in when the ac is low on freon it will keep kicking in and out. have your ac charged that will fix your problem. Phil.

check your ac clutch assembly sounds like you have a combination low freon level .you may have a bad clutch assembly also let me know what you find. Phil.

It really sounds like you have a bad clutch assembly on your ac compressor. You can feel the front of the clutch, see if anything feels loose with the car not running, of course. ha ha

1999 ford ranger power windows not working.

If the windows worked well before but became intermittent, I'd be checking the switches. You can also power the motors with jumpers to insure the motors work. If the brushes are worn, you can sometimes make the window work one last time by giving the door a good thump to jar the armature and possibly get better brush contact.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

Wiring Diagram for 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0

if u can gain access to the ignition switch wiring use a testlight and probe each wire while turning the ignition at start position.one of these wires shld have power during starting position and release it again to confirm.this wire goes directly to the trasmission multi lever position swicht (mlp).this MLP is mounted just outside the transmission shifting lever ganged together.Trace the corresponding return wire using the testlight. You may need someone to help you do the job.The return wire usually go to a relay on your fuse box on the engine compartment. Then from relay to the starter.

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....
