I do not have a BMW but I have had a similar problem with my car. The battery in my car is in the trunk! It may be located in the trunk under the hatch where your spare tire is found or in a side panel in the trunk. Some car manufacturers have found that by putting the battery in the trunk helps even out weight distribution (being the battery is heavy).

Another option you can try is looking under the hood and see if you can see any plastic covers that you haven't explored, most of them just pop right off and the battery is right under them or they only require a couple of screws or bolts removed to find it. Why they put plastic covers over these items(including under the car in the way of the oil drains for oil changes) is for aerodynamics and more effective engine cooling. Many higher end vehicles (BMW, AUDI, CADILLAC, LINCOLN, ETC) have these covers.

I hope this helps in your search and good luck, if not let me know if there may be anything else I can suggest.

No gas, weak battery (battery may be new but is it charged?), crankshaft or camshaft sensor is bad, fuel pump bad, fuel pump relay or fuse is bad, haven't pushed clutch down far enough(rug caught underneath), fuel filter clogged, ignition coils bad. You need to give a hint as to what you have tried. Does it crank but not start/ Does it simply click(starter) and not crank/

Unfortunately, BMW is a pain - in -the - **** and only a BMW dealer or an independent shop with BMW tools can reset this.

Need to know what "trans failsafe mode" message

Trans failsafe is "Limp" mode, it means a sensor has triggered due to a fault in OBC. You need to bring it to BMW or a competent shop to have a fault scan done to identify the actual cause. Limp mode allows you to drive short distance (so you're not stranded roadside)

98 bmw 740i wont start

I would first check the condition of the battery. If the battery is okay, that is it puts out enough current to operate the starter. I would then check for a short. The battery would be dead in a couple of hours only if there is a short or another load on the battery.
