Question about 1998 Volvo S90

1 Answer

Weak engine turnover / shaking engine

Went to turn on 98 Volvo S-90 and engine was very slow to crank, it finally turned over but the engine was shaking so hard the entire car was shaking. I've checked everything from the fluids to the fuses, but I don't have any idea what it could be. Any help is appreciated.

Can you give me more information? What was done before this happened? a Tune up? removing the intake manifold? if neither of these 2 had been done right before, then I would suggest removing the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator. If you notice ANY fuel in the vacuum line then the diaphragm has ruptured, and you are burning wayyyy tooo much fuel.

There could be a few possibilities:
1. Air Mass Sensor
2. Ignition Circuit Units
3. Dirty Idle Valve
4. Dirty Throttle Body
4. Voltage Regulator

Check the above one after another.

My Volvo s60 2.4L engine Shake's

Below are the common reasons why the engine is shaking:
  • Weak engine motor mounts
  • Faulty spark plugs and wires
  • Engine vibration harmonic balancer
  • Worn or loose timing belt or chain
  • Broken balance shaft timing belt
You need to take it to a mechanic to determine the source and cause of the shaky engine.

Engine will not turnover

If you are hearing clicks when you turn the key and if you know where the starter is, get under there and tap it with a hammer. Sounds archaic but when they start to go bad they stick. When you turn the key, the starter acts like the old hand crank you see in movies to spin the engine. When you release the key the starter believes it did its job and goes dormant. Anyway, if you hear clicks when you turn the key and if it starts after hitting it that is likely your problem.

New tdi starter weak turns slow

Sometimes battery cables can short the circuit; try getting them away from any metal or each other.

I am replacing the timing belt on a 98 subaru forester and the cam pullys moved I need to know where the marks need to be on the top and bottom pulleys on both banks and the crank a picture would be great

When you finally replace the belts, turn the engine over using a spanner on the crank pully, turn the engine slow incase there is any contact, when you are happy there is no contact, you can then use the ignition switch. Hope this helps.

My 1992 toyota corolla died and i can't get it started. i am in too deep...i'm a girl! it knocked off while i was driving. it tries to crank for awhile but engine doesn't turnover. then it started to click...

The slow turning of the engine indicates the battery is getting week. Gradually get so weak that only the clicking occurs. Next will be nothing at all because the battery is dead. Can be checked by turning on the lights. The battery can be dead because it was getting worn out or because the alternator was not charging it. It may not have been charging it because the alternator was bad or because the connections to the battery are corroded. Corroded connections at the starter motor should also be checked. Bad time to not have a boyfriend who understands such things. Good luck.
