Question about Ford Contour

My 96 ford contour will not start. It seems likes its not getting any gas. When you turn the switch on you dont hear the fuel pump.Any ideas

Theirs a symbol of air bag out when i turn my switch on ive never noticed before. And my ignition is drilled out . Lost keys

The airbag warning lamp typically takes several seconds to go out once the vehicle has started, so ignore that for the time being, until you figure out how to start your car at least.

First check the condition of the following:

1) Spark plugs and leads
2) Coil(s)
3) Air filter
4) Fuel filter.

After checking and/or replacing those, then have a look at the fuel pump and relay.

It sounds like you have a security problem, I had the same thing it would fire and run for half of a second and then that was it if anything at all. Had the security system rebooted, now it starts and runs fine.

So what you saying is it's hard to start cold right? Something in computer system not allowing excess fuel to injectors when cold. Probably sensor Get auto electrician to sort it out otherwise you end up replacing things that there is nothing wrong with They got the right gear

Ignition timing could be off, the plug wires and firing order may be scrambled, there could be a large air leak into the intake manifold, the EGR could be stuck open, the fuel pressure is too high and flooding the engine through the cold start injector, the MAP or MAF sensor is faulty, very dirty fuel injectors, idle air control valve defective, the engine coolant temp sensor is faulty (stuck at full hot).

Check the fuel pump. It's inside the fuel tank. You can read fuel pressure from the schraeder valve fitting on the injector rail with a gauge. If low or no pressure is shown, then replace the fuel pump.

What does the fuel shut off button look like on a 97 ford contour

I see it's been some time sense you posted this question. The Fuel Shut Off Switch is inside the panel beside your left foot on the drivers side. If you are having trouble starting the car sometimes but not all the time the Fuel Shut Off Switch is not the problem. If this switch is tripped you will not get fuel because the fuel pump will not get power from the relay. If it were me I'd replace the fuel pump under the back seat.

It sounds more like the fuel pump to me, if you don't hear the pump when you turn the ignition to the on position, that's the problem, check to make sure the fuse and the fuel pump relay are still good before you change the pump.

It is possible that when you ran out of gas air got into the fuel lines. What you will need to do is turn the key into the run position(not into the start position) and leave it for 30 - 60 seconds. This should engage the fuel pump and allow it to pressurize the system. After letting it sit try and start the engine letting it crank for 5 - 10 seconds at a time. You may need to repeat the process a few times. It is also possible that when you ran out of fuel you damaged the fuel pump and it may need replacing. When you put the key into run see if you can hear the fuel pump running. I hope this helps you out.

Not getting fuel

Turn the key on to the on position and not start. Listen very closely. You should hear the fuel pump run for about 2 seconds. If not then the fuel pump is probably bad. I think that the Contour has a place in the trunk to access the fuel pump. If not, you have to drop the fuel tank.

Where reset switch for fuel pump is located

I know there is not one on the 96 models. I fought a fuiel pump related issue on our 96. There are several sensors that must be working before the fuel pump will run. Start with the crankshaft sensor, then look at the camshaft sensor, finally there is a relay that actually runs the fuel pump. The relay should be under the hood with the fuses.

Dodge dosen't use reset switches on the fuel pump circuit. The only company I know of that does is Ford and Ford companies like Mazda and Jaguar.

Ford explorer no fuel coming through

disconnect fuel filter on flow side turn key on if it spits fuel you should check the sparkplugs and injectors for propper spray pattern
