Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Montero

Belt broke I believe I have found out the belt that broke, it came from the air condition compressor? I want to do this job myself, but I was just wondering, when I put the belt on, do i run it from the air cond, to the power steering pump, to the cam shaft. I hope this makes sense. I probably named a part wrong.sorry, but please help.

Are you sure that the belt only turns the AC compressor? Be sure that it's not also connected to the fan and the power steering pump. If it's only turning the air conditioning compressor then you can live with it for as long as you can live without air conditioning.

cheap_repair_5.jpg To save money you may want to install a bypass pulley, about $30 from rockauto.com. This will take the place of the compressor and allow you to use the same serpentine belt; but you will have no AC.

To replace the AC compressor you will need a vacuum pump ,gauges, recovery pump, and the correct refrigerant to complete the job.

here is a general idea of whats involved to replace a compressor.

Mitsubishi air compressor seized up and belt broke. what to do

If you need the air conditioning you will probably have to replace the compressor.

If you dont need it you can just disconnect the connector on the compressor and leave it there to support the new belt..

Belt broke replaced it now it wont start

Had a similar problem when my air conditioner compressor seized up. I could not believe that this stopped the motor from turning over and after many tries I managed to burn out my starter befor finding the real problem! Remove the belt and check to see if the compressor will move freely.

Air conditioning drive/pulley belt

That's a good question. I've always had a belt connected to the compressor on my hondas (1979, 1981) and worked on vehicles that had the belt on.

Most people like to have a/c working on their cars.

I would imagine that if the belt broke in an emergency, that it wouldn't hurt anything if run for a short distance before repairs could be performed.

Good luck on this one.

Belt broke on compressor to air condition and compressor has locked up

Replace the compressor and belt. Make sure to put in enough of the proper type oil charge when recharging the system. Should probably have it professionally done if you don't have the tools or the expertice.

Put a new belt on it and spray the condenser coil in front of the radiator with a hose when it gets up to temp or the sound starts and see if it stops. Thats what I did today. Flapping/clacking stops for about 10 minutes until thing get hot again.A/C blowing cold air the entire time.
