Question about 2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Open Question

Tail lights not working.

Driver's side running light not working. Mechanic deduced the circuit board needed to be replaced. A few weeks ago I replaced brake bulb in passenger side and after that the running light on the passenger side no longer worked. Both running lights out. Went to used auto wreckers and got 2 newer circuit boards (man there said they looked almost brand new). Replaced both boards, driver's side now working but passenger side still not working. Is this a fuse? If so, how do I check the fuses?

SOURCE: 1994 Volkswagen Golf CL break lights don't work

Well try checking the stop light switch. It is located under the dash. Just follow the brake peddel arm up and you should see it.It has two wires and if you pull out the connecter and jumper the terminals in the connecter .The brake lights should come on,if they don't then try replacing your missing fuse.15 amp will do.

These are not related issues. The problem is a really common one. Most likely the circuit board is bad. I sell about 4 a week for these trucks. You can pick them up for around $20 at your local parts store.

get a test light and check for power and ground at the tailight circuit board, and then also check connector at drivers side by back bumper where main wire harness connection is and trailer light harness plugs in , check for power there too, probably a bad corroded connection and or circuit board bad at right tailight.

What voltage should you be getting using L.E.D. lighting ?
Im looking for 12vdc under normal conditions, but L.E.D.'s wouldn't require as much voltage. (What happens is the 12vdc usually needed and provided would be resistored down by a power supply to a more managable L.E.D. voltage.)

I'm guessing there is a circuit board / module that your led's get their power from.
Id look for corroded or dirty contacts providing the power AND
Id also look that the power supply input for the 12vdc is making it.

Hope this helped a little...

just look for the blackened/burned pin on the rear light plastic connector and sand it down to re-establish a good electrical connection and save yourself $800 big ones on replacing the multiswitch.

CHECK TURN SIGNAL FUSE.IT COULD BE BLOWED OR YOU HAVE FAULTY TURN SIGNAL SWITCH.BECAUSE BACK LIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS SHARE SAME CIRCUIT WITH TURN SIGNAL SWITCH.

Over time corrosion can accumulated and rust out a tail light socket and render it non-functioning. Yes it can be replaced and in your case for about $6.00. You can find these at most any auto parts store.

Brake lights quit working

Tail lights acting insane?

We had the same issue with our 2000 Pontiac Montana. Brake lights, turn signal lights, running lights, back-up lights and emergency flasher didn’t work at all or operated at random. The cause: poorly designed aluminum contacts on the tail light circuit board and wiring harness connector arced over and disintegrated with normal use.

Pull the tail lamp assembly, remove the electrical connector and look for burned contacts on the connector plug and the connector socket (they call this long plastic piece with the socket the circuit board: it includes the four bulb sockets. Replace the circuit board and the wiring connector.

You can DIY this job with basic auto mechanical/electrical skills and tools. The two circuit boards and the two connectors set me back $230 (2009 cost) for new parts. The electrical contacts on the factory replacement parts are improved.

I needed a T-30 torx driver to remove the tail light assembly (you need this to change out bulbs, too), wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape and an electrical lug crimper to do the job.

Chevy venture

Solution to your problem ... 1- I purchased from 1aauto.com a pair of Circuit Boards for my Chevy Venture 2003 for 85.00 $ ..free shipping 2 - I Installed them both , all lights now were not working at all. So I checked them and they were all burned ...So I purchased new ones ....Everything was working fine now but now my signal lights were not working left and right .....Checked the fuse box next to the passenger side door .... It was burned . Changed the fuse / Signals are working fine now ....All is good I just did this yesterday evening August 12, 2008 Conclusion ..Change everything going forward so you do not need to run around like I did from one store to another!
  1. Circuit Board : New
  2. Bulbs : New
  3. Fuses : New
Thank you
