Re: SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF THIRD GEAR ON A AUTO SUBARU...
It could be the clutch cable needing adjustment although this would be the ideal scenario! More likely that the gearbox is worn to excess (a polite way of saying it is shot!). I'm afraid to say I would favour the latter!!!! I could be wrong though but I have seen this before and I feel your pain!!!!!

UNfortunately it sounds like your clutch has failed...and is slipping.....it sounds like the pressure plate may have fractured......and considering it is a wrx, this would definetly be the weakest point as the gearboxes are almost indestructible......

Subaru makes/sells a good product. Too bad you've had issues with the clutch in/of your WRX. Since you have 25 years of experience driving manual transmission car(s) you should understand that the problem can not be pinpointed without taking the component apart. Your vehicle is under the manufacturer warranty so Subaru should repair/replace the defective clutch. After the WRX is fixored sell it and buy another VW......Peace
