86 chevy stalling out

86 Chevy silverado 305 small block.
truck will start up good and idle forever but as soon as i put it in gear a block or two away it loses power, hitting gas has no responce. have to wait about 45 minutes to restart. ive been told to check fuel filter and catylitic converter for cloggs is this a possible solution? Tomoorow i am going to change plugs, check distributor, change fuel filter, air filter, trans filter, and put fuel cleaner in tank...check engine light is not on, it is not fuel injected. there is a air leak on one side where the exaust meets the engine, was told the fuel pump is pretty new. truck had been sitting unstarted for at least 6 months....any ideas

oh and the crank case vent filter is missing and the hose right there that goes from that to the block is very loose...

changed fuel filter...no change. cat converter was pretty hot tho. altho i do still see alot of exaust fuems comming from tail pipe...

even in park, if i rev engine for a minute its starts to die down and stall like its flooding. i think there is a leak in the exaust manifold, could that be it? what about a serpintine belt? im lost

by buddy sent this response, unfourtunatly he lives outa state..here it is, do u think this is a good solution?

wish i was still up there to help, depending on where you have an exhaust leak,it could cause an extreme rich condition if the O2 sensor is picking up the leak.you say you do have a carb and not throttle body fuel injection?because they do look alike in ways.try this,if you do have the carb.,get a can of carb cleaner, find somewhere on the rubber fuel line and pinch it off so no fuel can pass, start the engine,it will run for a few seconds and start to die but use the carb cleaner to keep it running, after about 30 seconds go ahead and let it die, remove the pinched fuel line and prime the carb with carb cleaner, start engine and see if it has helped.what this is doing is if the carb is flooding due to dirt in the fuel bowl,by running it out of fuel it sucks out out dirt and fixs the problem.you can also look srtaight down into the top of the carb with a flashlight and see if fuel is dumping into it. at idle you should see no fuel at all,no drips or anything.also!!!!you know where the pcv valve is?its in the valve cover, take it out and plug it up while working on it!gas fumes in the oil will be sucked into it and reburnt and cause problems.there is a devise on some types of GM vehicles called a "purge valve",if you have one of these and its bad,it will totaly flood an engine. it may be hard for you to find so i wont get into it now unless i have to later.you or someone have a camera phone?send me a few good close up shots of your carb and engine to:[email protected] i hope this helps....Rick.

no i did not....thanx for asking tho. i really dont know what to do with it now. oh..however, i think the check engine light is probably not working becuz when u turn the key b4 starting, the only light that comes on is brakes. i have changed and gapped the plugs, flushed and filled radiator, oil change and filter, fuel filter, pcv filter, air filter, checked plug wires for damage, use carb cleaner on carb and did the choke thing, havent took off ca converter yet....

any more suggestions? and dont say take it to a shop cuz i am poor lol....

havent thought of the coil...see just keep shooting ideas at me, thats what im looking for. i know in the end after trying every damn possability i will probably still end up paying as much as i would at a shop but i can say I did it. i will check out the coil and timing and let u know from there. thanx

i noticed that the choke dosent move when i pull throttle and rev it up, but if i manualy open choke alittle while reving up its rev's alot better withous hesitation or missing..think the choke is sticking?

and am i supposed to see the choke adjust while reving the engine? any suggestions

rebuilt the carb and is running better now, gets better fuel air mixture however its overheating and still causing it to stall when its warmed up. thermostat?

  • charlie armstrong
    charlie armstrong Feb 21, 2009

okay, took a look at the thermostat and it was pretty awful looking as was the housing unit as well. on top of the housing unit was a plastic peice that was cracked, upon trying to remove the housing unit it snapped right off, i learned that this was a vacume sensor of some sort and also the coolent temp gage that is connected to the thermostat housing unit had also been broke off some time ago (goes from housing unit to computer i was told). so, i got a new thermosat and housing unit with these other two components....it is too cold out today to put them on but what do u think the chances may be that this could be cousing alot of these symptoms??

Fuel filter sounds like it is a prime suspect. if cat convertor it will be extremely hot possibly glowing as this goes on.

THE FACT THAT IT HAS BEEN SITTING THE JETS IN CARB CAN BE CLOGGED FROM VARNISH DUE TO OLD GAS. BELT WILL NOT CAUSE. EXHAUST LEAK WILL NOT CAUSE THIS. IF YOU LIVE SOMEWHERE WHERE YOU CAN DO THIS TRY UNHOOKING EXHAUST AND DRIVING AND SEE IF YOU HAVE POWER IF SO THEN IT IS EXHAUST BLOCKAGE

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2009

ASSUMING YOU DO HAVE A CARBURETOR. TRY REVVING UP AND CLOSING CHOKE MANULALLY LET IT BOG DOWN THEN RELEASE CHOKE AND LET IT CLEAR OUT DO THIS A FEW TIMES THIS WILL FORCE IT TO **** THRU ALL THE JETS AND SOMETIMES WILL CLEAN OUT

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2009

Did you ever get this figured out?

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2009

a weak coil could cause this. a carb out of tune or in need of rebuilding also. it is hard to diagnose over computer. timing check ok?

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2009

yes you should have whats called a choke pull off valve this opens choke when revved up. will be a valve bolted to side of carb with linkage going to choke assembly. or you can just try to adjust choke open and drive and see how it runs

thermostat would be most likely and easiest to change

Either no spark or no fuel. Get a clear inline fuel filter ( their cheap) and put it on by the carb. where you can see it. Now you can see if your running out of fuel. Older vehicles can develope a crack in the suction fuel line and suck air instead of fuel. I found one once by just blowing on the line and hearing the hiss.

If the timing is off in an 86 Chevy 305 could that be a reason it would only start and idle yet cut off when put in gear and gas is applied

yes-but it could be old enough to have jumped cam timing which is not correctable with an adjustment/// it could be something else

1991 chevy c1500 stalling

Usually a problem with a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the intake thru the valve.

Chevy 305 small-block engine runs good has a bad idle and dies when idling. I used a 350 intake and ignition system and put onto the 305 and need to know what to look for to make idle

if this is a fuel injected engine youll most likely have to replace the idle speed control sensor this should solve that problem.youll have to get one for the intake that you put in the car(one for the year and engine size of the replacement parts)

1989 pontiac firebird 305 v8 starts and idles

Your idle air control valve may be dirty or the wire harness may be damaged. First try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner and make sure you use all the can up and try to get the idle air control valve cleaned. A faulty or dirty idle air control valve will cause engine to stall when put in to gear from idle. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% soon.

Have an 88 Chevy c1500 305 Eng i want to change tbi to carburetor

2bbl intake will not fit 87-95 small blocks heads are diferent from pre 86.the center bolts on your manifold are angled different than the front and back bolts.your 2bbl manifold has the same angle bolts front to back.i converted my buddies 89 to carb, had to make adapter plate for carb.but to make a long story short there is a lot of power loss and fuel economy your better of with tbi.
