I believe fail safe mode is usually direct drive which in most 4 speed transmissions is third gear. As far as what could cause this could be many things, electrical, clutch leakage or transmission oil bypassing the clutch that the transmission wants to engage, clutch slippage which could be the friction disks in a certain clutch that don't have any friction material left on them. IE like a brake pad the friction material on the pad once it is gone the brakes don't operate very good you have metal to metal contact you need to change your brakes. same concept. Are their any codes? Did the check engine light or transmission light come on? If you have a light try and see what the light says by scanning the computer. this should give you a good place to start.

SOURCE: 2001 Dodge Stratus Transmission Problem

COULD BE LOSS OF ALL TRASMISSION FLUID, BROKEN HOSE, BLOWN PUMP,BURNT TRANSMISSION RINGS( HOW DID THE TRANNY OIL SMELL?) BURNT TRANNY FLUID OR A COMBINATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE. IF IT JUST QUIT, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL REQUIRE A REBUILD OR A SALVAGE TRANSMISSION FROM A LOCAL WRECKING YARD. THE LATTER BEING THE CHEAPEST AND AT TIMES THE BETTER DEAL ALL AROUND, TIME WISE AND MONEY. VERSUS A REBUILD THAT REQUIRES NEW PARTS, BANDS, PUMP, SEALS AND ON AND ON PLUS HOURS OF LABOR TO FIX EQUALS ONE BIG BIG BILL!BEING A 2001 A TRANNY FROM A WRECKING YARD ISN'T GOING TO HAVE THAT MANY MILES ON IT EITHER SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME PRETTY DECENT ONES. THAT'S THE ROUTE I'D GO, BUT YOU'RE FREE TO CHOOSE EITHER CHOICE. I DON'T ENDORSE OR CONDEMN EITHER ONE, JUST POINT OUT THE GOOG AND THE WEAK IN EACH FOR YOU TO DECIDE! GOOD LUCK! SOURCE: Cant find transmission filter on 2003 Dodge stratus Coupe.

The filter is inside the transmission. You need to take the pan off the bottom then you can replace the filter and the pan gasket.

SOURCE: replacing serpentine belt 2002 dodge stratus

Did this on my 2002 Stratus 2.4L. I agree with other poster, you do have to remove the passenger tire and wheel wall to do it, but the tensioner travels clockwise.
Note: I offer this solely as a description of how I accomplished the task on my vehicle. It should not be taken as me advising anyone else in any way on how or whether they manage to repair their own vehicles.

1) Engaged parking brake, loosened lugs on passenger front tire.
2) Jacked-up and placed jack-stand.
3) Removed piece of black under-carriage which surrounds the oil filter and attaches to front bumper. There are at least 10 plastic push-pins to remove and I managed to destroy half of them in the process.
4) Positoned belt over lower pulleys and tensioner (as best as possible) then used a bungee to hold the top end of belt up while I worked under the car.
5) Used a 3/8 ratchet and inserted into square hole attached to the tensioner, disengaged the tensioner (moves clockwise) then used a brace to keep the ratchet handle in that position.
6) From top, removed bungee and finished placing belt over alternator, checked the position of entire belt, reengaged the tensioner, and replaced wall and wheel.

SOURCE: location of thermostat on 2002 dodge stratus 2.7 eng.

The thermostat on this car is located on the passenger side lower Engine block. Follow the lower radiator hose and it will lead you right to it. The Wheel and splash guarding need to be removed as well as the Alternator to gain access to the housing bolts. It about a 3 hour job to replace thermostat.

Check the owner's manual for the trans. capacity (or call someone like Jiffy Lube, etc.) and ask. The filter is probably inside the transmission.

My 1997 Dodge Stratus is stuck in limp mode, second gear forward or reverse. It doesn't have a speedometer display or the tachometer most of the time. I replaced the output speed sensor and the Tr

Its not likely the transmission is causing the problem if both the speedo and tach are out. The tach does not involve the transmission.
Sounds more like a problem with the instrument cluster or the body computer.
You may have to get a used shop manual to get the wiring diagrams and testing procedures.

I have a 2002 dodge grand caravan the trasmission is running in safe mode is there a fuse that needs change on top of the filter and sensor

Safe mode as in it won't shift past 2nd gear or something similar? That means there is a transmission problem and you need to get it serviced or replace the whole transmission. It could be as little as an input sensor but can also be a fault with the internals.

Does the 2002 cavavlier have a shift solenoid? If these go bad would that cause the trans. to not shift out of first?

Your car has an electronically controlled transmission and if one of the shift solenoids was bad and caused a fault the PCM would revert to a fail safe mode and would start off in second gear and performance would be decreased to prevent damaging the transmission.

Transmission Not Going into Overdrive

First check and make sure the fluid is full. The most likely cause is a failed solenoid pack. Circuit codes normally mean something electrical not mechanical has failed. The solenoid pack is on the outside of trans pretty easy to replace.

Sounds like you maybe having a sensor failure (engine). A computer diagnostic can be performed at the vehicle dealership to determine what caused the fail safe mode to activate.

2002 dodge stratus clutch removal

first the engine does not need to be removed, a engine support bar is placed over the engine bay and hooked to the engine while the transmission is dropped, the clutch is bolted to the flywheel on the engine side and not on the transmission, if you are requesting info on how to seperate the transmission from the engine then you will need to support both engine and transmission equally so that there is no hang up between the transmission input shaft and the clutch splines, also be careful not to cause any damage to the pilot bearing or it will be harder to remove later, then use a pry bar between the two, being out of the car could be a bit more tricky,
