Question about 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

Car is running fine, then hesitates a couple times, then returns to normal. Noticed happening going up hills. Just had catalytic converter and muffler changed, seemed to be worse before, but is still happening.

SOURCE: Engine Stall/Stumble after filling the gas tank

POSSIBLY. BUT MORE LIKELY TO BE A VAC LEAC TO THE EVAPROTIVE SYSTEM. CHECK ALL OF THE VENT TUBE UNDER THE VEHICLE, EXPECIALLY AT THE CHARCOAL CANISTER. REPLACE ANY BROKEN LINES AND THEN TRY AGAIN.

I think I would check or replace the "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor". It gives engine temperature signal to the Engine Control Module. I did a search on internet to see if there is a quick test of the "Coolant Sensor" (http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/may98/techtotech.htm)or replace (Auto Zone SU326 $22.99). Good luck

Move it to 3rd instead of drive and see if you still have the noise. May be transmission related since you have replaced everything else.

Testimonial: "I'm thinking you may be right....i probably need to loosen the exhaust pipe bteween the converter and engine to see if that makes a difference....if so then it's most likely the converter, would you agree?"

Why do my car slow down going up hills.and go normal on straight roads

sounds to me it could be a plugged catalytic converter. the symptoms are runs good , no strain, or on the flats, then loses power with exertion, or long uphill to the point you think it's going to just quit on you. easy test is to unbolt the catalytic inlet, and give it a quick test run. sometimes you can tell by having someone race the engine while you monitor the exhaust to see if enough comes out of it. usually happens over 75,000 miles

you may have a bad catalytic converter, because when the exhaust system get hot it melts and constrict the exhaust flow . bring your car to a muffler shop and have them check the exhaust system pressure. they normally do this for free.
