In the 1963 Chevrolet Impala 409, fuel was fed into a single four-barrel carburetor bolted to a cast-iron intake, while the spent gases were expelled through a dual exhaust system. The fuel lines are attached to the fuel pump.

I imagine you have found it by now but just in case, the fuel pump and filter are mounted on the underside of the frame just ahead of the left rear suspension.

Sounds as if your vapor recovery system is plugged, although you should have a trouble code if you have this problem. Go to an Autozone and have them pull your codes for you.

SOURCE: my jimmy will not start. I replace the fuel pump

Check or replace your ICM (ignition control module) The ICM or the Ignition Control Module, is the brains behind the spark plugs. The ICM tells the spark plugs when to fire and lets the engine know when gas needs to be injected for proper engine ignition. Sometimes if your ICM is out or going bad, you may be able to start your motor up nicely once and then when you turn it off it may not start back up. It can also make you feel like your engine shake and "sputter" bad.
Start with the ICM and thank you for using Fixya, good luck

Verified code p1451 vent control valve malfunction. problem appears to be at purge valve. Is it likely mechanical or electrical?

Its likely machanical although can't rule out electrical.
This is what is called the EVAP SYSTEM what it dose is vent gas fumes from the fuel tank because with the fuel injection systems now the fuel pressure is high compared to a machanical fuel pump system .So the electric pump puts more fuel pressure more volume of fuel It needs a place to go because the engine can't burn it all so there is a return line back to the tank this is what the EVAP system is all about.
Their is a vent valve usely someware near the fuel tank its a sensor when the pressure gets high it electrictly senses this opens then sends the fumes to the charcole canister. Then the purge valve located on the intake manifold is supposed to sence this build up in pressure and dump ot into the engine when its running at a higher speed and burn it through the cataylitc convertor system .
Except for 1 problem the system dosn't really work .
Its kind of like those vapor recovery system that are supposed on gas pumps that the big gas companys tryed to do and then said we will pull are stations out of your states if you keep driveing this down our throughts

Gas comes back out when filling the tank keeps shuting off when filling

the vent line is stopped up. You will have to remove the charcoal canister located on the drivers underside of vehicle. then clean it out and blow through the lines. This tends to happen most with people who live on a dirt road

hi this is the fuel vent line, or breather hose from the tank, you need to locate this under your vehicle should be roughly half way down the filler, or in some cases on top of the fuel tank, it is possible it is blocked with road dirt as they normally do..just a tip for you when you access the hose, extend the hose so it does not fill with dirt and you should be ok...hope this helps please rate thanks

I,m having trouble filling my gas tank. The pump keeps shutting off.

The vent on the tank is restricted and the pump nozzle can't take all the air coming from the tank as it fills. Many gas stations across the country have vapor recovery nozzles designed to capture air from your fuel tank and vent it back into the tank under ground, and out the roof vent pipe on top of the building. It's for fuel vapor emissions reduction. Until you put a few gallons in the tank, pull the boot back a little with your fingers to unseat it from the filler neck, then let go and you should be o.k. If it keeps shuting off after that, then you may have a problem with your own vapor recovery system not working properly. Check other nozzles and see if they all are that way. Mabe it's the station.

The vehicle wont accept fuel it spills all over and gas gauge is stuck over full??? but runs out of gas, then very very very slowly it accepts very little gas then you can drive again.chevyscott20@yahoo.com

SOUND LIKE YOUR EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL NOT WORKING.SCAN VECHICLE FOR FOR FAULTY FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR MALFUNCTION.AND THE CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID VALVE OR CANISTER VENT SOLENOID NOT WORKING.CAUSING EXCESSIVE FUEL PRESSURE AND FUMES BUILD UP IN FUEL TANK.CHECK CANISTER IT COULD BE GAS SOAKED NEED REPLACING OR VACUUM LINES GOING TO CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID OR VENT SOLENOID COULD BE BROKEN.PURGE VALVE LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE ON A BRACKET AND VENT SOLENOID LOCATED ON A BRACKET NEXT TO FUEL TANK.CHECK BOTH MAKE SURE VACUUM LINES NOT BROKE OR DISCONNECTED.MAKE THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR INTACT ALSO.FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR ON TOP OF TANK ON THE FUEL PUMP MODULES.ALL YOU CAN DO IS REMOVE CANISTER SEE IF FULL OF GAS REPLACE IT.AND CHECK FOR BROKE AND DISCONNECTED VACUUM LINES.THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO HOOK UP DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT CHECK IT OUT.BE CHEAPER BECAUSE ALL THEM EVAP PARTS NOT CHEAP THAT WHY LET DEALERSHIP SCAN IT SAVE MONEY IT WILL CUT THE COST.WARNING DONT KEEP DRIVING VECHICLE.GAS VAPORS PRESSURE BUILD UP ON HOT DAY FUELTANK WILL BLOW UP LIKE BALLON.PRESSURE KEEP BUILDING UP.

Replaced the fuel pump fuel filter , no start in my 95 S10 Blazer. add gas will run, untill the gas stops pouring in by hand . new part on top of the throtle body as well, i think it controls th O2 and...

1. Does the pump actually run (key on engine off) pump should run for 2 seconds and go off and can be heard if you listen at the filler neck with the gas cap removed)
pump not running - Check relay (replace if bad) check wiring/fusese

Pump runs... go on to #2...

2. check the gas guage. is the gauge reading in the normal area it would read in or is it way way off like WAY above full or way below empty? This is a sign the electrical connection at the pump is plugged in backwards and the pump is spinning the wrong way and not picking up the fuel... (This is easy to get plugged in backwards inside the tank when installing the new pump)

3. Check for feed, return and vent lines being installed wrong where they attach to the tank... they can easily be hooked up wrong and fuel is either pumped up in to the return line or pumped in to the fuel tank vent line..

4. check for kinked or crushed fuel lines from tank to engine.

5. check fuel pressure regulator to be sure its not stuck open.

Gas gauge reading empty even when tank is full

Usually if the gas gage does not work yes it is true it may be the sensor if it is electronicly controlled. the sncor will more than likley be in the tank. here is how to remove your gas tank.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the fuel tank.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Fuel filler and vent hoses
    • Fuel tank skid plate
    • Fuel tank wiring connectors
    • Fuel supply and return lines
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel pump assembly
