Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

My Landrover discovery 300tdi Japanese spec is giving me a very irritating problem. Jerking as I accelerate. The rev counter seems to drop back as I accelerate and stops when I take my foot of the gas. The car idles fine and sometimes it doesn't ****, but when it starts to it is such a pain. The car moves no warning lights, no error codes of diagnostic, we have changed the filter, cleaned the tank, gave it a new lift pump a while ago thought that's where the problem was but it still never went away. Seems to be something to do with fuel or gears engage fine, (it's automatic). What could be the problem, me and my mechanic are out of ideas. Also there is a noise in the front of the car like a loud squeaking noise in the morning when I start the car, and if I have parked it in an area for long and it gets cold, the noise increases with revs but after the engine gets warm it's goes away, what could this be ?

SOURCE: 96 lincoln town car- loud humming noise

I had experienced the same problem with my 93 TC. I'll try to make it short. Replace the Idle Control Valve. Cost me $50 at AutoZone. It has a electronic plunger that has a rubber o ring on the end of it. It separates two air chambers inside the valve. When the rubber gets old and the plunger is suppose to cut off the air coming in from one chamber to the other, the air gets sucked between the chambers across the old rubber causing the humming noise. That is also why the engines revs up and down and wont idle right. It is located between the firewall and the back of the motor just to the left (drivers side) of the throttle control assembly. When you look up on the internet on how to replace it, it will tell you to remove all the housing surrounding the wiper blade control arms and assembly so that you can access it. If you take your time, just remove some of the hoses and wires connected around it and you can access it without removing all that ****. Only has two screws to it that point up and can be reached with a ratchet and extension. Car runs great now and finally got rid of that noise.

I would suggest hat you replace the timing belt. The noise that you hear is the belt.

SOURCE: engine revs but car doesn't accelerate

Since you did not say what type of transmission you have i will suspect the clutch is slipping if it's a manual.
If it's an automatic, it could be several things. Low fluid level...clogged filter, fluid needs to be changed..transmission serviced...weak pump, bands/clutch packs worn...etc
Good luck..i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.

replace ignition coil, spark plugs, also double chek your coolant temperature must be normal. overheating causes car slows down and engine cant handle excessive high temperature or may damage it.

When going along fine my landrover discovery suddenly revs like hell and pushes out big clouds of smoke what could be wrong?

It seems to me that you either have a dirty injector. Maybe you should try using those cleaning additives to the fuel. Tank it up full.

the rev counter on the 300tdi disco takes its speed signal from a wire connected to the back of the alternator (single spade type connector) this wire usually breaks rewire and should be ok

cruise faults are usually caused by a vacuum pipe splitting check all the vac pipes to the cruise control actuator in the engine bay and at the brake pedal switch of end are split cut off and refit pipe
