Question about 2005 Ford Freestar

While driving the 2005 freestar , it will cut off, causing all belt driven systems to fail. Very dangerous. The vehicle will start right up withiut waiting any time, but may repeat the cut off at any time.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

A late reply; I'm sure you have found the problem by now-
It sounds as if the battery (old and new) are not receiving sufficient charge.
Check the drive belt tension and add a cheap digital multimeter to your 'tools.'  These can be had for well under $20 US and you can then check across the battery terminals to see if the charge voltage is between ~ 13-14.3 volts at an idle. In no case should it be lower than 13 volts with the engine running since the nominal battery voltage is 12.6 volts when fully charged.
You may have a separate regulator that is ill.

The airbag and the alternator may have been caused by a drive belt failing on the engine, this would cause an overheat, I hope you did not drive it very far as this engine can be ruined by excessive overheating. Look under the hood and see if the drive belt is on the engine.

2005 freestar transmission problems


This is probably the result of a belt / loose linkage. Linkage is the system of mechanical rods, cables, etc. that connect the gear shifter inside the car to the transmission itself. This is usually an inexpensive repair.

PCM's don't fail often & you don't diagnose
things with a quess

Would drying out a pcm be something you would have
to do as a vehicle owner, after you spend $40,000 for
something?

What is the it that happens?

You have an ignition misfire or egr issue,no power
on hills or knocks?

You didn't mention a Mil Lamp or checking for codes,
or the battery being checked or consider replacing before
winter or it quits

Cutting off how? Need details Does it shut down completely?

How often should you change the sepentine belt 2005 freestar?


The belt is your accessory drive belt, no different
than the older V-Belts of the last 120 years

Nothing special ---just a belt

You replace it as you have your whole life

That may be every 6 years, if you turn it over & it
has cracks across it

There is a lot on the internet just on belts
Go to Gates or some belt mfg & educate yourself

Have no idea when a v belt left & a single flat belt
changed names, we lost the entire driving world
& now no one has heard of a serpentine belt

They have only been on vehicles for about 30 years

All you have to do is look at the belt &
where it travels ,to find the pulleys,what
items are driven by it & the tensioner

Surely you can tell it from the other pulleys

Reverse sensor not working on 2005 Ford Freestar. The "off" indicator stays illuminated on dash control even if you hit button to cut on/off. Have checked all related fuses and they are all OK....


You have a bad reverse sensor or cable. My freestar got "gently" hit from behind and it damaged one of the 5 sensors, the (RSS) Reverse sensing system controller wants to see all 5 sensors at start up of the vehicle, if it does not, then it shuts it's self off. Else the RSS controller is damaged.
