SOURCE: Temp gauge will go to hot & come back to normal,is it thermostat?

try the thermostat first if its not that SELL IT lol the head gaskets can cause it to over heat so will cracked or warped heads if you drive it to long overheating ( if it is )
you can do alot of damage to the engine GET IT LOOKED AT this can some times be very costly to fix

HEATING ISSUES

One way to tell a bad thermostat in a car is if the car overheats frequently even if there is water in the radiator.Stuck open - no heat from heater, temp gauge hardly moves off of cold.
Stuck closed - overheats engine, temp gauge quickly climbs to hot.listen for any rubbing, grinding, or whining noises from the pump. look under water pump while running, if pump is going bad. water will come out of weep hole on the bottom of the pump. good-day!

2004 Impala ls temperature dash gauge

fans came late on those car, like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block, and coolant has hard time to pass through, and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high, even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

My 2003 kia sorento's heater will not work. what are possible reasons as to why this is?

check coolant level first. the reservoir also acts as a de-gas bottle so let it run then fill it to max line and let the engine idle to normal operating temp. if its full and temp sensor reads in normal range go drive it on the highway, if the temp gauge plumits then you have a stuck open thermostat

Does the car have a normal oil level on the dipstick? The behavior is consistent with a broken timing belt except for the part about the temperature gauge going to the top which would indicate overheating or a faulty gauge.

2003 kia sorento running cold but still has heat

Are you sure it's running cold? Maybe you just have a bad gauge lead or sender?

If you have a gauge you can check things out by grounding the lead going into the temp sensor on the motor. If you can't find it get a service/repair book from the parts store for reference.

If you ground the gauge and it goes full hot than the gauge is fine. Next you need to ohm the sensor and see if its reads a closed circuit on a warmed up motor. If not, your sensor needs replacement.

I hope this helps.
Good luck and be careful.

My 2005 Kia Sorento is running hot I have no idea why.

did you check the coolant level? , is a good place to start, a low coolant will make the car running hot, also check if the radiator fans are runing when the car reach the normal temperature, usually in the middle of the gauge..other than , I recommend you to take it to your mechanic to be checked for leaks in case is loosing coolant
