Question about 1995 Ford F250

1 Answer

Idle fluctuates on 1995 f250, sometimes dies, sometimes revs, no apparent vaccum issues, IAC with scan tool reads low voltage issue. Could this be vaccum, charging system, faulty computer? Problem is sporatic, causes hard shifting when fault light occurs.

Engine stalls cold or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

icp sensor, definitly. you can get to it but you have to go from the bottom. remove the trans filler tube, and lower the the trans slightly, then you can remove the turbo heat shield and get to the sensor, you will need a 1 1/16" 12 point crows foot socket for the sensor its self.

the idle air control valve is responsible for engine idle.
this is a common failure on ford's. but I don't think yours is bad because it does idle high befor it dies.
you stated you had codes p0171 and p0174 these are lean codes for bank one and two, you said you found a vacuum leak and repaired it, the vacuum leak was mostly likely the cause of the lean codes, however the pcm has calibrated the fueling stategy for this lean mixture, what you need to do is erase the KAM "keep alive memory" this is done by unhooking the negative battery cable for 60 seconds, this is the only way to erase the KAM the $6000.00 machine I use wont even do it.

once the KAM is clean the computer will go into a relearn state and all operating values will be adjusted for the vehicles current condition, during this relearn session the vehicle may have some driveability issues (low or high idle, stalling, poor fuel economy) the relearn should complete within 10 minutes of idling and then 10 minutes of driving.

good luck and keep me updated

Check the fuel pressure at the rail assembly, there should be a min of 40 lbs at the rails. Do you have any loss of power under a load? You may have an issue with your o2 sensor that is causing the ecm to send an improper signal to the engine ign/fuel map.

I have a Ford 1990 f250 xlt 7.5 When starting revs up and down slowly then dies sometimes, why?

Clean the throttle body and idle air control motor(IAC) on the side of it. Mostly the IAC and the hole it sets in. Also check the air filter.

both o2 sensors are on the right side of vehicle if they are bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 1 sensor 2 ( S11 & S12) sounds like the o2 sensors may not be the problem. Possible restricted exhaust on bank 1 or a fuel delivery problem on bank 1. Have you checked the voltage readings on a scan tool for the sensors on the right bank ( bank 1) ? are they switching or are both voltages the same? If they are the same you will need a new cat converter.

You need to clean the IAC again and also the throttle valve and bore, use only CRC brand Throttle body cleaner. After they are thoroughly cleaned disconnect the battery for 5 min's and then drive the car in varying condition for a few days. If that doesn't cure the issue you have more serious problems and will need a scan tool to look into the readings from the MAF, TPS and ECT sensors. High idle cold start is normal then slowly dropping after a few minutes. I assume you never had a check engine light. Correct?

Check timing, vacuum lines for leaks, battery and alternator for proper voltage output, ignition coil in distributor for cracks. If all are ok, have the injectors and fuel pressure regulator.

You need to have OBII scan performed. The fluctuating idle sinus like a MAF sensor, Temp & fan are separate issues. Get scan done, that should identify exact issues.

Idle air control problem, or Throttle position issue. Check on scan tool to identify. Autozone does this for free.

1996 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 shows trouble code P0505 Idle Control System Malfunction. What is the best fix for this problem as the vehicle needs to pass smog. Thanks for your assistance!

Sometimes that code is generated when the charging voltage from the charging circuit is too low and the minimum airflow spec gets lost by the pcm. This can be a bad alternator, battery etc. As well if someone has adjusted the set screw in the throttle body trying to fix the code then I'd suggest retesting with a used throttle body. As well one last thing the intake gaskets/plenum pan on those engines blow out and cause a vaccum leak that can cause spark knock and oil consumption. If that vaccum leak was large enough it could cause your low vaccum reading and that code. As always check the accuracy of the map sensor and tps when dealing with idle speed issues

The engine runs really well, until you bring the car to a stop. Then it dies. Sometimes it dies when moving. Just push the clutch pedal in and when the revs go down, it dies.

The two most likely possibilities are a vacuum leak, or a faulty Idle Air Control (IAC or IDAC) valve.

Inspect the vacuum hoses for cracks or tears. With the engine running, listen for any tell-tale hissing sounds. Make sure there are no leaks in the intake manifold area.

Check the IAC wiring and connector. Use a voltmeter to test its harness. Refer to a manual for the specs of the voltages on the connectors. Also test the IAC itself with an ohmmeter. Again, refer to the manual for the correct resistances across the leads. Another diagnostic is to remove the IAC entirely, leaving the intake open. If the engine idles ok with the IAC removed, this is a sign that the IAC is not opening at idle as it should.
