SOURCE: missfire and smell of gas
Unplugging the mass airflow sensor may be ok to do just to get you back home,,but it is not wise to leave it unplugged,,because your engine control unit cant decide just how rich or lean to make the fuel mixture without it.
A smell of gasoline is usualy a sign of this.

since your asking bout the catty coverter im assuming you did a little playing with that, its probly your o2 sensor a really badd o2 will starve you for fuel till your wide open the dump a bunch of fuel given you all that power

There are a few other things you can check that you didn't mention:
Have a fuel pressure test done, the fuel pump could be weak, or not operating right.
Check all the vacuum lines, all it takes is a pin hole in a line to screw up the whole thing.
Also, did you change the fuel filter?
Have the map sensor checked, and the vacuum hose going to it.
