Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva

1 Answer

I changed the fuel filter on my car. It started once and then wouldn't start again. The battery has been recharges and the starter changed out. I don't think it's the passlock system because I've never seen the security light the entire time I've had the car so it could be on if the light is broke

It cranks and doesn't start, gas was poured directly into the carbourator and it still didn't catch,I don't know about the buzzing noise, and a friend looked at the spark plugs and said it wasn't them.

your car is fuel injected and it does not have a carburator, with the gas in the throttle body that should have made it start, you are not getting any spark to the spark plugs . sounds like the crank position sensor is bad. that runs the spark

That was it. It turns out the cps got unplugged when the starter was put back in. I got my cousin to come over and he removed the oil filter to plug it back in and then replaced the filter. I now have a working car. Thanks!

SOURCE: 1997 oldsmobile 88 won't start the security light

Im guessing you tried to bypass the key in the ignition/steering column. This is ok unless the actual problem was in the TDM (theft deterrent module) In this case, the 2 wire bypass does nothing. There is another way to bypass this. Check out this link for tons of info and some DO IT YOURSELF options. Ive done several key bypasses and tons of full bypasses. They both work well, it just depends on what part is failing. I think you need the full bypass to eliminate that TDM.

See if the fuel is reaching the engine by loosen the fuel pipe before the injectors if not, change the fuel filter the one in the tank and the one next to the engine and bleed the fuel line it might be an airlock.

Sounds like you changed the part that failed but did'nt change the part the caused the part to fail. the spark plgs wear out and need more power to fire as they wear out as do the old plug wires 87 is a long time ago and some are still running with the orginal parts (their that good) change all the parts at once ( plugs , wires , cap and rotor aand now again another coil) and you'll be back to going. remanber that low voltage will kill everythig and some starters will crank when the voltage is too low for anything else. fuel pump and the spark need good voltage to run and the starter may still turn the motor at very low voltages. check the battery and the charging system. You may try to just jumper to another car ( so the voltage is known good) and if it runs OK you are finding and testing battery and charging system parts.

Hello. My 1997 Chevy Tahoe refuses to start. The problems began with a bad fuel pump. I changed. It worked. The fuel pump died again. I changed it again and it has been working. I parked it for two weeks....

Now you have a good battery & a starter that turns over the motor

Have you cycled the key on & off with a fuel pressure gauge on the
fuel rail?

Do you have a fuel filter that isn't over 3 or 4 years old?

Have you checked for spark while cranking ? Use an old plug on the wires,
if you have ignition wires, don't ground the wire without resistance

If you removed the ducting & MAF Sensor it won't start

Tell us what you checked & exactly how that was done.
