Why does my 1999 silverado keep blowing my return line off the power steering pump in cold weather mostly at -25 or colder

Because the oil is too think. Check with GM about a low temp substitute.

Engine whining

check your power steering fluid level. when level gets low low the pump will start to make noise, also in colder weather the fluid becomes thicker and if the pump is starting to fail it will create noise also,

How do i change the power steering hose on a 2009 journey

I have a 2010 dodge journey sxt. the return line on the power steering system is defective in material and design. Chrysler has not modified the design or the rubber composition. I have had the return line rubber ends blow off in the cold, dealer just used aftermarket clamps put on and all was well until this winter when the metal line meets the rubber hose. the hose is the weak link. they are easily replaced. they are about 6 inches long and there are two of them on one end and one on the other by the reservoir. easy quick job.. use 400psi hose with compression barb fittings. don't let the tech's at Chrysler or other tear it out it's about a 2 1/2 job. they will cut the solid line to get it out. it's the most expensive line and is easily altered, the factory ones are garbage and will fail as soon as it gets cold. the return line is not pressurized. there are other lines that are rubber but don't seem to fail. the high pressure line from the pump to the rack snakes from the pump under the plastic shield over the tranny to the rack. this will be obvious if it failed. all fluid will be around the front of the engine. look it up online and you will see how numerous the problem is. dealer techs are resorting to altering the hose material as the factory hoses will split in cold weather. the fluid is atf+4 and some say it will eat rubber portion of the lines. there is too much back pressure in the return line he oil can't get to the reservoir fast enough which causes the too much pressure and this splits the rubber portion of the line. the lines are too new and will only be a dealer part, alter the one you have.

hopes this helps as I feel your pain. 3+years of ownership... journey's are a nightmare of defects, cheap parts and bad engineering....

I like that you were knowledgeable to check both coolant lines tells me you are getting hot coolant through the heater core next thing to check will be the blend door on the inside of your vehicle. The blend door is a door that switches from cold air duct to heater duct depending on what you are using at the time. If it is stuck on the cold air duct you will not get any heat sometimes these doors are vacuum actuated and sometimes they are electrically actuated most the time you are able to see the movement of the motor from inside if you don't see any movement but you hear it move chances are it is the door blend I hope this helps.

Use a standard Dextron III ATF. The fill depends on weather your engine is warmed up or cold. There is a fill line for each on the power steering fluid reservoir. Do not over fill.

1st thing in the AM the power steering on my 99 silverado pickup does'nt work till you jog the wheel a little then it is fine. Will flushing the system do any good and if so how do tell which is the return...

Sounds like power steering control valve is sticking.Flushing might help.The pressure line is metal and the return is usually rubber at the back of rear of pump.Use power steering fluid not atf to refill pump.

Need to replace power steering pump. whats the step by step way to remove and reinstall

Remove the accessory drive belt from the pump
Remove the pressure hose from the pump
Remove the return hose from the pump
  • Remove the bolts from the pump.
  • Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle.
  • Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump
  • Remove the reservoir from the pump

  • Install the pump to the vehicle.
  • Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  • Install the power steering pump bolts.
  • Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
    Install the return hose to the pump.
    Then just reverse what you did to remove.
    Once you have it al back together fill the resevoir.
    Do not over fill
  • Start the engine. Rotate steering wheel from left to right. Check for sign of cavitation or fluid aeration (pump noise/whining).
  • Verify the fluid level. Repeat the bleed procedure if necessary

    2001 sebring LXi - Steering sticks in center when cold. After driving short while or in warm weather no probblem. The longer is sits or the colder the weather the harder it is to move from center.

    What do you mean by stick? It doesn't turn at all or it is just harder to turn?

    Also how cold? Posting your question in May, I don't think you mean freezing winter cold unless you live in the southern hemisphere.

    For freezing cold temperatures, it is not uncommen to get harder steering especially if you have old contaminated power steering fuild. At freezing cold temperature, power steering fluids gains vescosity and it is harder for the pump to circulate it, but the problem should go away as the engine warms up. I would suggest that you replace you fluid with a fresh approved one.

    try double clamping it put on 2 clamps instead of just one and see if that wont help

    Most gas injected engines run at a higher speed when started from cold....It's the cold start application working....As long as the idle speed returns to normal within a minute or two....longer when the weather is colder.....nothing to worry about

    You're going to have to bleed the system alot on those trucks. Just remove the return line and have an assistant turn the steering wheel back and forth just enough to engage the pump and filling the resevour while doing this. Keep bleeding until you have a good flow of P/S fluid out with no air bubbles. This can take a while.
