if only loosened belt then you should be hearing those squeecking noise. if there are leaks at the end of racks then it should not be a heavy steering too. its a good chance its your pump.

SOURCE: pressure return hose repair for 1997 toyota corolla

no need to bleed it at all, just turn steering from left to right and its bled.never done one but it depends on whats involved and what you need to remove to get at it.Also over the pond anything thats not come from motor city they dont know how?? to do it.Just like in europe if its american with auto box then its telephone numbers.Dont be scared just get a new pipe and allow a saturday morning to change it but make sure you borrow a set of pipe spanners first, like a ring with a **** in the end so you dont round off the nuts.Think they are either 16mm or 17mm heads.

SOURCE: steering wheel of my Toyota Corolla LE 2007 vivrates

Hello. A vibration in the steerign wheel indicates an issue with the front tires. They are either out of balance, and would need to be rebalanced, or it is possible (although remotely) that the tire(s) may be compromised (after hitting a pothole), the belts in the tire may be corrupted. What I would suggest is to take the car to a reputable tire place, and get the balance checked. While the tire is on the balancer, the Tech will be able to see if the tire is out-of-round due to possible road damage. Probably just a tire balance problem. Thanks for choosing FixYA for assistance.

I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla, it sounds as if the belts are slipping and I'd like to replace them myself. From doing some research it seems that there are 3 belts: alternator belt, power steering belt and...

Well if your sure that it really is the belts the job isnt too hard. Refer to your owners manual for a clear view on how to replace them. I feel that every car owner should own a car manual for the car that they own cause they really do come in handy and are very informative. My question for you is how did you determine that it is your belts that are making the slipping sound? An oil pump that is no longer pumping oil will cause your engine to make almost the same sound and the squeal that you hear is the cylinders lacking lubrication. You might want to check your oil pressure just in case.
