Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

It was running one day and the next day it wouldn't start. It was staling to start but always started. It turns over but will not start. Pump is working, gas filter was recently changed. I changed the ignition coil, spark plugs and cables. When I tried to start it, it almost started but no cigar.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

first most GM OEM systems will need to recognize the key first and foremost ,to do that you will need to roll window down on driver door, turn the key to the run position and with engine NOT running leave the key on for 10 minutes exactly ..then turn ignition off then try to start engine. if original system is working engine should start normally

The car dies out, it will turn over but wont start, it ran one day then wouldn't

It is probably one of three things. It isn't getting a proper spark, proper fuel, or proper compression. Good luck!--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vitara 1.6 16v 96' wont start

There are multiple reasons. Need to start the process of elimination. First things first, the cheapest thing to check is the battery. I've had several vehicles which displayed the same thing: ran one day, wouldn't start the next. Fortunately, they just needed a battery.

After that, could be other issues: alternator, starter, possible timing component issues, fuel pump.

I know this is vague, but, the it is sort of a loaded question.

Hello: When you turn the key on the fuel pump should run for 2 seconds if it isn't the check the f/p fuse, relay and it could be the pump itself. You might take a hammer and beat on the bottom of the fuel tank (in the center) while someone is holding the key in start (turning engine over) if it starts you have a fuel pump problem. (pump in tank)

My first thought would be: If you repaired an emissions hose, take the car back to Auto Zone (or another parts supplier) and let them tell you what code comes up now. You eliminated one problem, now you have to find another.
I wouldn't do a fuel pump without more information.
