SOURCE: I have a 99 pontiac grand am gt and my security light comes on

Hello and thank you for choosing fixya.com. It sounds like this may be a factory alarm. If you have the owners manual, or if you can get one for that specific model, you should be able to look up the alarm system and find out how to (if possible) disable the alarm temporarily. My other suggestions are as follows: 1. Check your battery terminal connections: make sure they are clean and secure; also, if possible, put some terminal grease on them to prevent corrosion, rust and acid build up. Check the connection to your starter as well as your ground to the frame/chassi/block, whichever it's grounded to. Some vechiles have a smaller ground wire that runs from the main ground on the batter to the body, next to the radiator somewhere or possibly on the side firewall. Check that all connections are clean, and secure. You may just have a bad ground which is a common problem in automotive electrical issues. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com and I hope that this information helps you fix your alarm system.

I changed the battery in my 2001 grand am ....now it won't start

mine does the same thing, but my security light flashes. I was told that it is the security system on the car not recognizing the key. The key I am using is the original key for the car though. I was told that a quick (but not so quick) fix is to open the door, put the key in, turn it on but don't start it.... set for roughly 10 minutes so the car will reset itself. It works everytime but is a pain in the ****. Was told the only way to completely fix the problem would be to put a new motor in it.

you can not bypass the security in that car, it is built into the main computer, they have problems with the ignition switch screwing up and the only way to start it while the light flashes is to turn the key to ON but don't crank engine, leave on for 10 to 15 minutes until light goes out then start car.

Security Light comes on and then car won't start a day or two later unless I leave the key in the start position for 10 minutes

Most times, the ignition switch is the problem. After installing the replacement, you will need to leave the key in the run position for ten minutes the first time. Shouldn't have to do it again.

Hello: Try this procedure, Turn key on attempt to start engine leave key on, the security light should be blinking, wait 10 minutes. The security light should be off. Turn key off for 10 seconds, turn key back on (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START) wait another 10 minutes. Turn key off for 10 seconds. Do the procedure again as in step 2. At the end of the third time turn key off then ten seconds later attempt to start the car. It should start.

Security will not starte

Try turning the ignition to on and wait until the security light goes off. It may take up to 10 minutes. Unfortunately this will become a recurring problem.

Programing ignition key for 2000 grand am security light comes on and the car will not start for 10 to 15 minutes.

Turn the key on and wait for the security light to stop blinking (may take about ten minutes). Then turn the key off and wait for at least one minute. Then try to start. That should program the key chip.

Notice if your SECURITY dashboard light is on when the key has been turned to the on position. If it is then your security feature needs to be reset.
The security feature will often come on when 2 failed attempts to start the car have occured or the battery goes dead or is replaced.
I believe to reset the security feature you have to place the key in the ignition and turn to the on position without starting the car and leaving it there for 10 minutes. Just wait it out and the light will go out. Then take the key out and try restarting.
I've been through this many times. You need a good battery to leave the key on for 10 minutes.
Take it easy!
