The costs will be high if the seals need to be changed. I'm assuming he means cam and/or front main (crank) seals. There's a lot of labor involved in tearing down a VG30 engine to that point. The seals are seated behind slight lips, which makes them a pain to remove, and since you're disassembling that much, you may as well do the timing belt service while you're in there. It takes me about 10-12 hours to do that full job on a Z and i've done about half a dozen. That being said, is there some reason he says the seals need to be changed? My last Z, I did the third timing belt at 183,000 miles and the seals were fine - no leakage at all. They are listed as parts to change at the 60k interval but I change them only if there is evidence of visible leakage. If you scratch the cam or crank face while changing them you can create an irreparable oil leak, so if there is no visible leakage, leave them alone or you may create a problem where one didn't exist before. In layman's terms, when it comes to those seals, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Sounds like an electrical problem, make sure the ground leads to the engine are good and the battery terminals are clean. It might just be a bad connection in the wiring harness try jiggling the connections to see if it makes the gauges jump when it is running.
