Question about 2001 Dodge Caravan
The AC is only working in the 5th position. Since the compressor and fan still blow cold air in this position, would this be some sensor in the fan that needs to be replaced and can it be easily done on my own?
I am assuming you mean the fan is only blowing on the high setting - if so you need to replace the blower resistor. It is located behind the glove box. When you open the glove box you can see that it stops because of 2 rubber bumpers on the back of the box. Squeeze the back of the box together so the bumpers pass the stops and it will drop down. On the left hand side there is an electrical plug with a few wires going into it. You will have to release the clip holding it and pull it off. There are 2 screws holding the resitor in place, remove the screws and pull out the resistor. Then just reverse the procedure to replace it. The resisitors are available at most parts stores or the dealer. - Many technicians also recommend replacing the blower motor at the same time as it may be drawing too much amperage and could be the reason for the failure of the resisitor, this may or may not be the case. The resisitor is usually less than $20 so you may want to just replace that and see how it goes and if it does burn out replace both (it wont happen right away), or if you dont want to risk the $20 just do both now, although the blower motor is a bit more pricey and a little more work.
