Don't jam it in there, take a look at it and there is a key spline, one that is larger than the rest. use of the Mark 1 eyeball as supplied by your creator will indicate which end will fit.

Try to get a pry bar or large screwdriver between the CV housing and the transmission case. A little force may be required, but you have to pop the housing out of the transmission. A c-clip in a groove on the splined shaft is holding the shaft in, and must be popped outward, for the housing and shaft to be removed.

if you are trying to reassemble the cv joint ( why ever you would need to pull it apart in the first place as the new boot slips over the assembly)
do it outside of the transmission or you will damage the transmission internals
place the transmission end on a block of wood
line up the shaft and hit the top end with a heavy mallet
( sledge hammer will burr the ends )
of you are just putting the shaft back in the transmission to reassemble the front end , line up the splines and use the mallet to start the splines into place by compressing the circlip

it could be the clip @ the end of the axle shaft or the shaft was never pushed all the way in,if the clip @ the end of the axle shaft is bent , or worn it will not lock it into transmission , the clip should expand outward when the shaft is in the trans.also could be the spline in the trans,or bad motor or trans mount

How do i change 2004 toyota tundra rear end drive shaft


1st, with th E brake on and the wheels chocked. Remove the 4 bolts that connect the shaft to the
rear end flange and pull(or pry if required)away from the rear end. Next pull the shaft back toward the rear off of the front spline. You may have to remove the seal from the from the front of the shaft
at the spline to pull the shaft all the way off. Somtimes the grease on the spline creates a vacum
that makes it tough to remove. When you install the shaft there are marks or notch's on the shaft
and rear end flanges to line up as well as the spline+yoke. But an old rule of thumb is make sure
that the U joints are all in line, so if one shaft is at 12:00 ( I ) the other must be at 12:00 also.
Once the shafts are lined up, line up the marks on the flanges and bolt it up.

I need to replace the drive shaft


One the spline end there will be a keyway type spline one that is a different size than the rest. Make sure that is lined up before anything. Once you have the shave mostly in place i normally put the U-Joint in place and then pull or push the middle of the driveshaft to make both ends line up. Once you have all the slack out of the driveshaft and U-Joint tighten the bolts and make sure your fluid is full.

Retaining clip?


You may have a clip that is not seating properly in the groove. Try to push the clip into the groove, work your way around the splines. You are just checking to see that it does not stick anywhere in the groove keeping it from compressing. If you replaced the clip yourself it may be spread too far open causing it to hang on the edge of the gear in the transaxle. If so remove the clip and compress it with a pair of pliers so that it is now smaller than the inside of the groove. If these are not helpful, ensure that none of the splines on the shaft or inside the trans are damaged. You may end up replacing the retaining ring it is flattened or distorted. Try applying a bit of bearing grease on the ring to persuade it. Sometimes you will have to use a rubber mallet on the outer end of the axle shaft to get the ring to go into the trans.

How do I get the drive axle out of its transmission housing?


Yes ,it should just pop off.Have someone pull a little on it while you tap on the axle.There is an inside shaft that the outer shaft slides onto and there is a c-clip holding the two together. Sometimes the inner shaft pulls out with the outer axle if the clip doesnot release.If this happens you'll have to be carefull putting the inner shaft back in,because there is a washer at the end that may fall down and the axle willnot go back in.There is a pilot bearing at the end inside that the tip of the inner axle goes into and just before it is where the washer is.

are there splines on both ends ? .... the splines will go toward the transmission.
