Check the condition of the following:

1) Air filter
2) Spark plugs
3) Fuel filter
4) Coil operation
5) Spark plug leads

That's all assuming that the engine turns over. If not:

1) Check power to the starter motor
2) Check battery voltage (should be around 12.5volts or higher)

Starts hard, especially when cold

There are several possibilities

- cold start injector failed (if fitted)
- thermotime switch failed (if fitted)
- engine timing not correct
- fuel pressure low

Anyone out there know this engine well?

My 2004 Cavalier will just quit running while driving.

This sounds like a failed or failing antitheft system. When the antitheft starts to fail, even just for a second, the car will stall. Normally it will start right back up, but this problem will continue to get worse. Here is a link all about it.

When it rains car won't start

Get a can of starting fluid from the parts store, next time it fails to start spray the fluid into the air intake to the engine, if it starts you have a failing electric fuel pump inside the gads tank.

I just failed smog and the technician said that it was either the EGR valve or the catalytic converter that caused it to fail. at the same time when i let the car sit in the outdoors at work in the sun...

Have your main power relay replaced. It's what is causing your hard start, after the car is hot, especially sitting in the sun. It's located under the driver's side dash. As for the reason why you failed smog, could be the two you listed.

If you are saying your car fails to start because your not getting a spark at your spark plugs you might want to check your ignition coil.
