Question about 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Driving tonight, stopped for gas, listening to the election results on the radio. The car started right back up, but the theft system light was on. When I went to turn off the car, I cannot do so, the key is frozen in the on position, could not turn off the car. Took the negative battery cable off the terminal & it kept running. Finally removed a fuse, that turned it off, but the key is still frozen in the lock & theft light stays on. Removed the battery cable as it was nighttime & no help for me. Any Ideas? Thank you for your help.

A couple of additions. The car was turned off correctly when getting gas, the car was checked to be in park and neutral to try *& remove the key. I tried unlocking the car doors with another key. I do NOT have the key fob that may have origianally been assigned to the car & I do not have the manual or any paperwork. The car was just gifted to me

The ignition lock cylinder is worn out. after so much use, the brass key and tublers inside the lock wears due to filings that build up inside of the lock. When too much filings builds up, it makes the tumbler pins hang up inside. the upper portion needs to be disassembled to replace the lock cylinder. And of course, you will have a different key overall for your new ignition lock Good luck..

SOURCE: Hello I have a 2002

Yes there is a bypass. Costs about $200.00. You should be able to put the key close enough to the cylinder to get the security to go off. I don't know what you did to get the cylinder out. but there is a chip mounted to the steering column. once the key is close enough to it it will let the car start. If you broke the chip getting the cylinder out then you have some money to put out to get it running.

Friday while driving the dashboard gauges stopped working except the speedometer and RPMs. No air, no power locks or truck release. Also all the indicator lights you see when the key is on the on position...

It sounds like the anti-theft security system is engaged, this is keeping your vehicle from starting. I would recommend calling a local dealer where you are and ask them to help you. Hope this helps.

Dieing while driving but restarting right away, no starts from a dead stop. To me this sounds like the anti theft security system shutting you down. These have been known to turn off injectors while driving and starters while stopped. Check and see if a light is illuminated that says SECURITY when it fails to start. Leave the key forward and look for it. If you see that light, then it is 100% the security system. This link has tons of info on symptoms, causes, and some DO IT YOURSELF solutions.

Everything is working ....lights, radio, turn signals, gages move...except for gas gauge.....but the car won't start

make sure there is gas in the tank, if there is then listen when you turn on the key. you should be able to hear the electic fuel pump in the gas tank run for a short time before you start cranking the engine. if you don't here it chances are your fuel pump needs replacing.

Hi I own A 98 Chevy Malibu, my ignition locked n i had to put a new ignition switch in, well now my cars tellin me Something Theft Service. Im wonder what I need to do? Iv unhooked battery for hours ect...

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

Sunfire will not start, it started for a second or two then quits could it be the fuel pump or ecm or anti theft shutting the fuel pump off i am totally baffled, 2002 pontiac sunfire

Have somebody listen at the gas cap for a buzzing sound when the ignition switch is turned on, or if you can hear it, it only does it for a few seconds, if you don't hear it, the pump is bad and the gas tank has to be dropped to change it.
This is not recomended, but I do it all the time to make sure the problem is in the fuel system. Spray a little bit of starting fluid in the intake, if it starts, the problem is in the fuel system, but listen for the buzz sound first.
Other problem could be a clogged fuel filter, or a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Have a fuel pressure test done, that would also reveal the problem, if it's a fuel problem.

This is the anti-theft PASSLOCK system. You can purchase a paslock 2 bypass system that will bypass the anti-theft othewise you will have to wait the 10 minutes with the key on the ON position and turn over immediately when anti-theft light turns off

2005 Chevy Malibu Anti-theft system indicator light

I just had this to happen to me - here's what you do - when it will not crank - turn your key over to ACC and let it stay on here for 15 minutes, the THEFT SYSTEM light will stop flashing. Turn your key back to OFF then turn it over as normal when starting and it will start right back up! Found it out from an auto store! One lady paid over $700 and then found this out!!!

Geo tracker lights and radio not working

power loss.
any good car elect. tech find this pronto.
just takes a volt meter to find the voltage drop point.

top fails:
1: corroded fuse box on right front finder (under fuse box)
2: did you say it kills motor too. cant figure above.

what about heater fan, it uses tons of current.
as does HL followed by tails.

20amps, 15amps and 5amps respectively

you have resistance some where.
and load , kills the voltage .

for me.
check battery voltage , when it dims out.
then of ok 12.5v is ok key on,not started.
then check voltages at a right fender , fuse panel
all points there, 12.5vdc , same as battery v.
if OK
check voltage at the fuse above right knee
with load full, hl, fan, brakes, just key on.

now you know what circuit is fail ing by now.

report back with this facts.

Can you bypass theft system

No, I think he has the same problem I do. I have a stock 99 real theft system. Usually after it rains or gets cold, a "theft system" light comes on in my dash. I can be driving, and the light will come on. If I turn the car off, I cannot restart the vehicle till about 20 minutes have passed and the light finally goes off. Sometimes this light comes on when I try to start the car in the morning. I put the key in the ignition, and the car will not start for 20 minutes till the darn theft system light goes off. From what I gathered, the theft system issue has something to do with a "passlock II" defect. I have no idea what this is, all I know is that I can't get a mechanic to listen to me, because the issue never repeats itself when I go to a garage. It gets a little annoying, but I've learned to deal with it.
