Question about 2004 Ford Ranger

Replaced head gasket and now the timing is off forgot to use the special tools and now im having trouble setting the cams i got the motor at tdc but do not know where the cams should be sitting if anyone has specs that would be great.

You need lots of special tools for this engine, without them you will never get them set up correctly.

Remove the front wheel.
Locate and remove the 3 nuts on the upper frame mount,top of the shock.(torque 20 ft lb)
Remove the nut on the sway bar link.(torque 18 ft lb)
Remove the lower bolt that goes thru lower control arm and shock.(torque 258 ft lb)
Then use a spring compressor to compress spring and remove the nut on the spring plate.(41 ft lb)

SOURCE: need cylinder head gasket torque specs.

looks like there is special sequence to reassemble and tightening, a quick note replace any bolts that have two punch marks.tighten as follows: x x x x x 10 4 2 6 8 x x x x x 7 5 1 3 9 torque all down to 15 ft lbs torque to 30 ft lbs plus 90 degrees. Good luck!

Resetting timing after replacing head gasket


Do you have the timing belt on and the tensioner set correct? If so, just rotate the crankshaft around until the notch on the crank sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the oil puimp housing (TDC). Now the camshaft sprocket's notch or pointer should be at the top and exactly in line with the mark on the rear timing belt cover. If it's not correct, you'll have to release tension on the belt, remove it, and set the camshaft to the mark. But before you do that, turn the crankshaft back (counterclockwise) just three notches. Then you can turn the cam to line up, then return crank to line up, and continue with belt installation, setting the tension, and re-checking timing marks after rotating the crankshaft a couple of revolutions. Once you know the timing is set to TDC, no further timing adjustments are possible, because the computer controls timing. I don't know how important it is, but just to let you know: Chrysler recommends after belt removal or replacement that one perform the "crankshaft and camshaft relearn alignment procedure" using the DRB scan tool (Chrysler's scanner device) or equivalent scan tool.
And the firing order on all four cylinder engines is the same: 1 3 4 2.

Im trying to get the over head cams in time


you cannot just replace timing belt without special tools like OTC #6474, and camshaft alignment 303-465 timing peg.
always put #1 piston at TDC.

If it is the timing belt you are replacing, wait a second while I explain:
The timing on this engine is SUPER critical. If you are off just ONE tooth you could ruin the engine. In back of the heads there are two cam covers- little triangular plates that seal off the cams and keep it from leaking. The covers are removed and a special tool made by Miller is bolted on each to align the timing when putting the belt back on. The crank is set at TDC and matched to the mark on the oil pump housing. Only then is the belt timing accurate when you put the new belt on. Then remove the special alignment tool and replace the covers. Don't try replacing the belt without this procedure.

Setting of timing chains


Get Ford timing tool kit, part = otc-6488 (For about $119 USD on eBay)

4 timing chains (3 front including the optional balance shaft chain + 1 back)

2 cam guides (1 front + 1 back)

2 oil tensioners (1 front + 1 back)

1 jackshaft tensioner (1 front)

1 jackshaft guide/cassette (1 front)

1 balance shaft tensioner (1 front) (will probably be ok, so dont replace it)

1 balance shaft guide (1 front) (will probably be ok, so dont replace it)

new sprockets + bolts + gaskets etc.

new spark plugs + throttle body cleaner + lithium grease spray + oil change

head gaskets


some of these parts (the front stuff) can be obtained as a primary timing chain rattle noise kit Part# = 2u3e-6d256-** ab for 4*4 & bb for 2*4.

The kits also have later part numbers for us$ 76 @ http://www.fordpartsonline.com

Its worth mentioning that this procedure is not enjoyable at all and should be undertaken with at least 8 full days to completion (I recon you could do it in half the time the second time).

It is basically on entire engine re-build with both heads off and the engine out of the vehicle.

It is not possible to do the rear chain or sprocket with the engine in the car as the flywheel needs to come off + at least 1 head, but it is possible to do the front primary chain and or front cam chain with the engine in the car.

You will be a ford exploder and timing expert after you do this - the main reason should be the love of your American built vehicle. Its a solid car - except for the plastic guides!

Disclaimer Note: This is how i successfully did the job, but i am not a ford mechanic and don't hold me responsible if this does not work for you.
Timing Overview

A Small Sprocket on the crank turns a larger (2 to 1 ratio) jackshaft sprocket that is in turn connected front & back to the 2 camshafts.

Thus a 360o turn of the crank will turn both the camshafts 180o.

Firing order is 1-4 2-5 3-6, Right side numbers 1,2,3. Left Side = 4,5,6.

At TDC pistons 1 & 5 are fully raised, thus 1 is about to spark & 5 is evacuated.

The engine will turn freely (no piston to valve contact) with the cams 180o out, it will even run (roughly) with 1 out 180o, any other settings may cause major damage to the valves.

The 2 cam shafts come with timing markings, "yes" real timing marks that anyone can use (even without special tools) to ensure correct timing.

The way to time it is to ensure both the off centre cam shaft slits are level/flat with the head.

With the engine at TDC both the cams need to have the off centre slot in the same position either up and level or down and level.

It is super critical that both the camshafts are 100% in sink with each other, i.e. not a few degrees off, the engine computer can compensate for crank timing but not engineering failure.

Be warned the camshafts can turn easily fast & hard by themselves as a few springs are compressed at TDC, I got my finger jammed and its still healing + if the engine is not at TDC you may damage a valve.

Now heres the hard thing that you will need special tools for - if you need to change the timing, you will need to be able to undo the cam sprocket bolt on both cams & these are done up real tight.

There is a tool that you attach that has 2 pencil thick shafts that fit into the sprocket and prevent it from turning - then you need to put about 90Nm of force on the bolt (remember the rear one if LHT)

For the $money$, its well worth getting yourself the tool kit - it will save you hours in the long run. Search eBay for otc-6488 should be US $119 - then sell them again for say $100.

There is also a tool version of the oil tensioner in the kit that screws right in and puts the correct amount of force on the chain + guide, to enable you to do up the cam bolt with the chain and sprocket in the right spot on the cam.

I relaced my distributor. brought piston 1 to tdc and rotor button on no.1. now the motor almost starts but doesn't and smells of raw gas.


Did you bring the number one cylilnder to TDC on the compression stroke? It sounds like you may have put it on TDC on the exhaust stroke?

Im putting in a timing belt and i cant find the marks on the sprockets on a 99 cougar i need a diagram


first of all you say timing belt so i assume its a 2.0 litre. well you have to pull valve cover and install a special tool in back of both cams to lock them from moving,they are specified and offset so only one way the alignment tool is inserted in back of cams,looks like a metal ruler. you also have to install a blank plug to stop the crank at tdc,it hits counterweight and stops crank from rotating,also the key will be at 12oclock and a notch on balancer lined up on oilpan and 1 and 4 piston will be tdc. you will need the special tools or will may be a tooth off and thats bad to do it twice,also replaced tensioner when you do belt.

The cams have a notch in the back of them (facing driver's side) in which fits a flat piece of steel to lock the cams in place. The notches are not exactly centered on the camshaft, meaning that it's impossible to set them 180 degrees out, because then the flat piece of steel that is supposed to be inserted to lock the cams in place simply won't fit because the top of the cylinder head will get in the way. I highly recommend getting a Hayne's or Chiltons manual if you don't already have one. It should explain this process under the Timing Belt Replacement instructions.
