Question about 1996 Saab 900

1 Answer

Front defroster on a 1996 Saab 900s does not work at all.

My front defroster does not work at all. When I turn it on it makes the windows form more ice instead of clearing the frost. (yes the frost is on the inside of the car) In the summer I do have to add refrigerant to the car for the air conditioner to work. I also have to add antifreeze to the radiator several times a year (I can not find the leak) and I have added coolant with little beads in it to fill any "holes" in the radiator.  If I can not fix this problem, is there a "clear mat" that I can put on the front windshield that plugs into my cigarette lighter that will clear the frost from my windshield?

Yes I tried the heater with the air conditioner on and it did not work. Apparently my air conditioner is not functioning right now. Now what?

2000 honda accord heater mode ? auto mode works, defrost mode does not

Is the a/c compressor turning on? When you turn the defroster on, the a/c compressor turns on to help remove moisture from the interior of the vehicle which in turns clears the fogging from the windows. If the a/c doesn't work, the defroster won't either.

Deicing Your Windows

Summary: During the winter months, or even a freak spring storm, it isn't uncommon to find the windows of your car covered in ice. Deicing your windows can be a bitterly cold experience, so why not learn the best possible ways for both preventing ice from forming on your windows and removing it in a hurry when you need to. Here's how. I really don't like going outside every morning to deice my windows. If you live in cooler (or even colder) climates, then chances are pretty good that you know what I'm referring to.

Over the years I have tried many different methods for deicing windows. I discovered that some work (though at a risk) while others seem to work just fine at preventing ice from forming (what better way of deicing your windows-provided you remember to do it, and others work-but require you to get really cold. Here are some methods, and a brief description of what happened to me when I used them.
  • Defroster. Probably the most common method available. Unfortunately, this method also comes with risks. While a properly working defroster can quickly (no more than 20 minutes usually) remove icy build up, it can also worsen any preexisting cracks in your windshields if turned on too high. There is another drawback to this method, and that is its cost. You can't really run the defroster without turning on the engine, and that takes gasoline.
  • Scraper. The traditional method for removing ice from windshields, a scraper should be in every vehicle that is in a cold climate. In fact, many car rental companies include them in their cars when you rent a vehicle from them during the winter. On average, this method can take about as much time as the defroster method, and while you are not as likely to crack your windshield, you will most likely get cold.
  • Vinegar. One of the best ways for deicing your windshield and windows is to prevent the ice from forming at all. However, not everyone has a garage that they can store their car in. In those situations, it is best to use a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Use half vinegar (any kind, though I prefer white since it does not smell as much) and half water in a spray bottle and spray it on your windows at night. This helps prevent ice from forming. The only drawback is that you have to remember to use it at night, otherwise it doesn't do you very much good. Although you can still remove ice by spraying some on your windows in the morning, you'll just need a whole lot more.
  • Rubbing Alcohol. For those who really need to move, try putting about 5 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol into your windshield washer reservoir. This turns the regular windshield washer fluid into a deicing agent at a fraction of the cost, and works wonderfully. Simply spray and use your windshield wipers as normal.
  • Blanket. This is perhaps the easiest way to prevent ice build up on your windshield. Just place a blanket over your windshield at night, and remove it before driving anywhere.

Front screen keeps misting up, but clears when you put air con on. Is this the matrix and how hard to change

when you turn on defroster on front screen, a/c turns on and directs cold air at window. If your defroster does not work. It may be due to a defrost switch not working.

I've taken out the relay to turn off my front

Are you sure that is not the AC compressor relay?
I don't know your car, but not aware of any cars having a defroster relay, a defogger relay for the rear window with the electric grid in the window, yes. Never heard of a defroster relay.

I have to turn on the air conditioner to defrost my front window during the winter time. If I turn on the heater to defrost it gets worse. How do I fix this?

To understand how a/c works will explain what is happening. A/c works by moving the haet from inside to outside. at the evaporator which is inside the car this action freezes the coils and the hot air of the inside condenses on the coils and water is drained outside. When there is no more water left in the air in side the car the windscreen goes clear. When you use the heater the water in the air in the car will still form as fog on the inside until the air temp dries it out. In short it is more efficient to use the a/c for short spells to clear the screen than the heater demister

Air flow issue- intermittently blows from wrong vents

This is a common problem on this site.
In your case I would look for a vac leak or a sticky blend door.
Since the direction of air flow changes when you are accelerating, I'm going to guess the blend door or doors are controlled by engine vacuum. There may be a vac leak between the dash and the engine, or the blend door may not be able to move back and forth correctly.
Defrost is the default position when a problem occurs, to make sure the windshield is clear of fog or frost.

Saab 900s window off the track

You will want to see if the clips that hold the window into the regulator are broken or not. If they look okay than your window regulator may need to be greased or replaced.

1996 saab 900s starts but turns off

Failing crank position sensor (CPS) is possible. If the ECU does not get a constant pulse from the CPS the fuel pump does not switch on, so no start due to no gas. if it is failing, the pump may activate intermittently.
