My 2002 ford explorer is only blowing out of the vents at all positions. Not on the floor or dash. Any ideas what the problem is?

okay i finally gave up on trying to figure exactly what my problem was so i took it to the ford garage. They told me that the linkage broke to defrost actuator and would cost $1600.00 to fix since they have to pull the whole dash to fix. Anyone else had this problem? Is there another way to fix this without the huge bill? Was it perhaps a recall from ford. I can live without the defroster for that cost, but i would rather have it fixed. My explorer has been a good vehicle and want to keep it for at least a couple more years. Let me know. Thanks

2002 ford explorer air only blows through dash vents will not switch to floor or defrost vents

This sounds like an actuator. There is usually several (three or four) on different vehicles. There will be at least one that directs the air to different locations such as defrost. You also may have a defective selector switch. I would check this before I changed the actuator or blend door. If the blend door is defective, this usually calls for totally removing the entire dash panel and usually requires several hours work. If you have to have a repair shop do this it can be very expensive.

2002 ford explorer AC and heat blowing in dash, but very weak from the vents

On the motorcraft parts web site, you can blow up
a picture of the HVAC Blend Door Motors & locations,
as well as part numbers

You can get failed motor from Amazon

With knowing where the motors are located, try switching
the air flow modes manually, to see what positions do not work

Then you know what motors to replace

I also have professional scan tool software & can see the codes
for the motors in enhanced data.

The-- Vent Blend Doors-by name

Defrost-up top
Cabin -the vents as you say in the middle & on the sides
Floor
Recirculate-under the glove box
Blend Door -under the dash on your print

When using the a/c or heater the air only blows out of the defrost vents, why?

The Mini motors that control the variable position of the vent flaps, depending on the dash controller position, may be stuck through lack of use. They are accessable from under the Facia, and can be manualy reactivated. it is a 2 person DIY job.

2002 explorer a/c blowing out of defrost and not dash vents

The direction of the air flow (dash/defrost/floor, etc) is controlled by vacuum going to the switch. There may be a vac line that didn't get connected or was damaged when they put the replacement engine in it. Check the lines on the firewall to make sure nothing is loose.

the next thing to check would be the selector motors, these motors are what move door to get floor or defrost or vent air and also hot/cold air, look under the dash try to find them, there bolted to heater box, there are 3, locate one by one then move every control and watch to see linkage move find the one that doesnt move and thats your problem, hope this helps.heres a picture to help you know what it looks like.7d37251.gif
