The timing marks are on the torque converter, you need to remove the little rubber oval ashaped plug to see them, set timing to 10 BTDC with igntion timing shorting bar removed.

There is no timing adjustment as the timing is controlled by the engine control module. These new cars aren't any fun, are they...

I wanted to check the timing in my "88" ford tempo gl but the book says a triangle shape for the automatic and all I see is a straight line. What gives?

If the timing has never been touched or changed....Don't Do It! Cars with point's, a condenser and a carburetor in the old days needed timing checked and adjusted if the points were changed for every degree of dwell it's off, it's off 1 degree of timing. With fuel injection, there's no need to check timing for the computer controls that with fuel injection. Also, do get a base timing on your car, you'll have to place it in "Open Loop", such as disconnecting the Coolant Temperature Sensor, but that will generate a fault code and you'll have to re-set your computer afterward and some vehicles need a Fault Code Analyzer to do so. Leave the timing alone unless someone has already changed it at one point in time or another.

Replaced starter, solenoid and battery on my 88 tempo. Started fine that day next day dead battery any suggestions?

Check voltage regulator. Also try to see if anything is possibly draining the batt while not running. Is the alternator charging at the right voltage? Do not remove terminal from batt to check alt. this can burn out a diode in the alt.
