Question about 2003 Ford Focus

My 2007 Ford Focus stalls at stops. The check engine light does not come on before hand, the rpms just lower to nothing. We cleaned the maf and the idle air control, changed the oil and transmission

The car has 57,000 miles on it

Egr valve probly has a hidden vacuum leak--the issue is usually internal or the gasket where it connects to exhaust--a dirty throttle body may also be case--get car scanned at a partsplace

Its possible it could be other things causing the problem, but seeing as you've checked most of the likely causes, it is most likely your Torque-Converter. The lockup clutch in your Stator-Fan located inside the Torque-Converter could be siezed, causing the car to stall.

I suspect it is a problem with the evaporative emission system. Basically, it collects vapors from the fuel tank and stores them in a charcoal canister in the engine compartment. It thens purges them into the engine when the engine is warm and running at road speed. You may be dumping too much vapor because your canister is filling with fule as well as vapor.

Do you try to "nurse" teh tank full at the fuel station? If yes, you may be flooding the canister.
Try just filling it 3/4 each time & see if problem goes away.

It could be a lot of things, check the gas cap, vacuum leak, IAC, may need a tune-up ( check plugs, wires, air filter), seizing pulley, timing issue (check CKP sensor and CMP sensor), sticking valves, misfire, Fuel line pressure, or an issue with CAT or muffler.Good luck.

the idle air control valve is responsible for engine idle.
this is a common failure on ford's. but I don't think yours is bad because it does idle high befor it dies.
you stated you had codes p0171 and p0174 these are lean codes for bank one and two, you said you found a vacuum leak and repaired it, the vacuum leak was mostly likely the cause of the lean codes, however the pcm has calibrated the fueling stategy for this lean mixture, what you need to do is erase the KAM "keep alive memory" this is done by unhooking the negative battery cable for 60 seconds, this is the only way to erase the KAM the $6000.00 machine I use wont even do it.

once the KAM is clean the computer will go into a relearn state and all operating values will be adjusted for the vehicles current condition, during this relearn session the vehicle may have some driveability issues (low or high idle, stalling, poor fuel economy) the relearn should complete within 10 minutes of idling and then 10 minutes of driving.

System Too Lean (Bank 1) Symptoms include stalling at idle, rough idle, poor MPG, loss of power, high pitch sucking sound from the engine bay. This is typically caused by a vacuum leak. The most common cause is a hole in the elbow at the PCV valve. It may be hard to see so you'll want to pull it out to check it. Also look at the elbow that connects the PCV hose to the intake manifold. It can get a hole there as well. This is 90% caused by a vacuum leak and not the O2 sensor. Most people (ignorant ones) will just say it is the sensor because it set the code. That code is a good sensor reporting a lean condition. Just replacing the sensor without checking for other problems first would be like replacing an entire wire harness when a light goes out instead of checking the bulb and fuse first. Other causes can be a bad sensor, bad MAF, low fuel pressure, or an exhaust leak. To fix the elbows on the PCV valve you can pick up new ones from the HELP section of the local part store. The part numbers for the elbows from the Help section are:
The one that goes on the intake manifold fits the nipple on the manifold snugly. But, it doesn't fit snug on the line so you'll need to use a clamp on that part. The one on the PCV valve is a very tight fit at both ends. If you don't want to bother trying to rig this up, you can purchase a new line from Ford. The part number is: F8CZ-6853-CA.

Check for vacuum leaks. Clean the MAF sensor and throttle body next. After that I would go after the MAF. But I use a scanner to tell where to look and do diagnostics. Volt /Ohm meter works also. Just takes a bit longer.

Change the air filter, spray clean the MAF sensor and clean the inside of the throttle body as best you can (Use a tooth brush). This will mostly solve your problem. It will take a second or two to start after cleaning them.

the iac code has nothing to do with the maf . the maf is your mass air flow sensor and it is in the air tube going to the throttle body. the iac is your idle air control valve that is in the throttle body next to the throttle position sensor

you can take some carb cleaner and spray around the intake while its running. If the engine picks up speed then the intake is definately leaking.

My 1999 ford f150 truck with a 5.4 liter engine misses between 1000 and 1500 rpms but idles ok and runs ok at higher rpms

...and no check engine light? Could be a number of things. Start with a couple cheap things. Check the shart/large diameter vacuum hose on the back passenger sideof the engine. On top of the intake. Common vacuum leak.
Or get some MAF spray cleaner and clean the MAF sensor.

2003 Ford Focus will not idle

try cleaning the MAF Mass Air Flow sensor element wire in tube with a toohtbrush and carb cleaner carefully. It gets coated with a film. It is in air inlet hose and has a wiring connector on it. Then drive for 15 minutes so it can learn the clean MAF sensor. Is check engine light on?

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  1. Remove the MAF sensor.
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Otherwise, you may need to adjust idle air control (IAC).

Car is stalling

PO171 means that the MAF (MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR )sensor is dirty or deffective . Or that there is a leak in the vacume hose leading to the MAF sensor.Try cleaning the MAF sensor with brake cleaner .Be careful not to damage it.Check your Air filter also. Make sure it is clean. the reason the MAF sensor gets dirty is because of the filter. Also look for any leaks in the hose or hoses connected to it.It is located near the top of the air filter...little black box with wires coming out toward the front of the car.

I think the issue is MAF related, a MAF will not set a code most times unless the signal is lost completely, like if you disconnect it, try this, disconnect the MAF wire connector and see if the problem goes away, the PCM will go into failure mode and substitute a signal, this will of course turn on the check engine light.
