you should only change any diff when damaged or if a different ratio is required and being a 4wd both diffs would need replacing with change of ratio, oil in the diffs should be checked regularly and oil changed every 20,000kms sooner if used in harsh condition

I have a 91 toyota previa and im trying to remove the rear differential..its a 2wd. I have unbolted the drive axle and the differential casing but its my understanding you have to pull lose the rear...

Most differentials are set up like this. There is a steel bar that is i the middle of the gears, this is held in with a bolt. remove the bolt. pull the bar out. Then push the axles in the center. There is a c clip to remove from the axle. They will come out easily. Pull the axles out. Once the axles are out the hog head as they call it, will come out. Just watch as the inner gears will come out also. And will have to be placed in the same spot. Kinda of push in and see. let me know

What does the differential fluid do? Where is it in the truck and can i check the levels myself? My truck seems to chug and hard to pick up speed .... would this be due to a possible clogged fuel filter or...

Hi, differential fluid lubricates and cools the differential, some have friction modifiers to prevent clutch chatter in limited slip differentials. As for U joints. Improper installation could result in a vibration or drive line shudder, usually during acceleration but would not likely cause poor performance/acceleration or engine "chugging" and for the fuel smell you have you should return to the shop that installed your new fuel tanks and ask them to have a look at it.

It sounds like the front differential is going out. I would suspect a galled bearing or the bearings in the differential are going out.Hope this helps.

Trying to identify rear differential on 87 ford ranger 7.5 or 8.0 need to replace since teeth from gears were in case.

You most likely have the 7.5, as that was the stock rear axle on older rangers.
There should be a tag on the differential cover bolt that has the gear ratio and differential size on it.

Fill Differential

On the differential around the middle to top of it there will be a plug. Usually these are squared instead of the normal hex bolt head. Just remove the plug and add your fluid. Add fluid until it comes out the fill hole and then put plug back in. I would reccomend cleaning the differential so you can check later on where the leak is coming from. It may just be a gasket from the case or even from the plug itself.
