How do you set the timing marks before i replace the timing belt 3.5 engine

Do u take off the old belt & turn the 4 cams by hand toline up marks & crank pulley or keep turnning engine until they get in line

Do not remove the old belt until all the marks are lined up. Only then should the old belt be removed. Turning the cams or crank with the belt removed can cause engine damage!

Did you put alot of pressure on belt when installed ? to tight will cause that vibration

dear friend-if your mark at the bottom is on TDC then that is fine,there is a 8mm hole in the top sprocket.alighn the hole with the mark on the cylinderhead,put belt on and tention turn ones around and lighn up marks.re-assemble.

G16a (8valve head) or G16b (16valve head)??which one
the 2 option engines are not the same.
first the cam must be timed, or spark is hopeless , due to its being end if the chain if events.
so, is cam belt fresh, 60kmiles or less.
its timed at #4 firing.

the cam cog wheel on your year, will have false markes

Not sure but if doing belt yourself I will give you important tips. 1) before removeing T/Belt set engine to TDC nr 1 there should be marks on the crank and cam (s) gears that line up with a mark on the block / head. 2) prior to removeing tension to belt get liquid paper & mark cam gear(s) & crank gear to point on block / head. 3) mark T/Belt to cam(s), crank, balance shaft if fitted. 4) release tension & remove belt. 5) transcribe marks from old belt to new belt & make sure correct amount of teeth. 6) fit new belt so YOUR marks line up. 7) have tensioner suply presure to belt. 8) turn motor twice by hand to make sure pistons no hit valves 9) Make sure YOUR marks line up if YOUR marks line up it has to be right. 10) Very IMPORTANT if spring tensioner lossen locking bolt again to take up extra slack in belt. 11) tighten locking bolt. 12) put back together.

Where are the timing marks on a 1994 honda civic 1.5


On the Cam gear are three marks. On the face of the gear it should say "up", then you have three marks one at 3 o'clock one at 7 o'clock one at 9 o'clock. the one at 7 should align up with a mark on the block. Some have a raised semicircle and you line up the 7 o'clock mark on the cam with the far left hand end of that semicircle. Now on the crack end you have a mark at the 2 o'clock position and it lines up with a mark on the block. Do not turn the crank or the cam independent of one another, as the valves can be bent. Remove the spark plugs to ease turning the engine when needed. The engine will turn counterclockwise. Remove all necessary left hand front wheel, inner fender splash guard, covers, top engine mount. turn the engine until number 1 cyl. is at TDC compression stroke, and all timing marks align as noted. Remove the lower crankshaft bolt and pulley, and lower belt cover. Loosen tensioner bolt and push it out of your way and remove the belt. Put on the new timing belt in this order, crank sprocket, cam sprocket, water pump sprocket, tensioner. Belt must be tight on no tensioner side. Push the tensioner against the belt. Turn the engine 4 turns counterclockwise, until the timing marks realign, loosen the tensioner and turn the engine again 3 teeth, torque the tensioner to 30 flbs. reinstall all the mounts and covers. all should be good.

Hi. i am really need help, i have just take out the timing Belt on my 1987 Toyota Camry then i replaced a new Belt and the Car would not started and i think maybe i set wrong timing belt because i forgot...


Don't crank that engine over is the first thing you do. Take out th eplugs and turn the engine by hand to it's marks. Take the belt off, check it for marks, yes, no? If no, how about the old one? Does it have marks on it? Match them up to the new one. and make marks, , turn the left cam over to it's mark, does it have two? Turn the other side over to it's mark. put the belt on, crank mark on the crank mark, cam marks on the cam marks, don't line up? It should, If the engine hits the valves, you will have to turn the cams at the same time by hand so they don't hit, don't force anything, if you get the belt on there without moving the engine, spin it around a couple times to make sure it stays on it's marks. I hope you didn't do any damage already by trying to start it. Hope this helps.

I have a 1994 geo metro & i'm replacing the timming belt but i ran across a problem. the cam shaft pully has two marks on it (1) mark has 60a & the other mark has 80c. so how do i aline the cam...


thats why you line everything up BEFORE taking the belt off. Usually when the timing marks are "ON" the dowel pin or key for the cam will be at the 12 o clock position. Also if you have the valve cover off, both cam lobes for number one cylinder will be pointing down.and both rocker arms loose. it would be a good idea to adjust the valves also.

Removal
Remove auxiliary 1. drive belts.
2. Support engine.
Remove:
Engine mounting and bracket.
Timing belt upper cover [1].

4. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3].
Remove:
Crankshaft pulley bolt [4].
Crankshaft pulley [5]. Use tool No.09213-60017.

6. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3].
7. Slacken tensioner bolt [6]. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolt.
Remove:
Timing belt lower cover [7].
Crankshaft sprocket guide washer [9].
Timing belt.
Tensioner pulley.

Installation
Installation
1. Check tensioner pulley for smooth operation.
2. Check free length of tensioner spring is 46,0 mm [8]. Replace spring if necessary.
3. Fit tensioner and spring. Ensure spring is connected correctly.
4. tighten bolt [6].
5. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3].
6. Fit timing belt. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
Install:
Crankshaft sprocket guide washer [9].
Timing belt lower cover [7].
Crankshaft pulley [5].

8. Slacken tensioner bolt 1/2 turn [6].
9. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3].
Turn crankshaft slowly 1 7/8 turns clockwise until crankshaft pulley timing mark [3] aligned with 45° BTDC mark [10] on
timing belt lower cover [7].

11. Tighten tensioner bolt [6]. Tightening torque: 42 Nm.
12. Install components in reverse order of removal.
13. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [4]. Tightening torque: 108 Nm.

Installation
Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] . 1. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. 2. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Push tensioner pulley firmly against timing belt to tension belt. 3. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 43-55 Nm. 4. Except Matrix: Turn crankshaft one turn clockwise. 5. Matrix: Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. 6. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] . 7. Apply a load of 2 kg to belt at . Belt should deflect 4-6 mm. If not: Adjust position of tensioner pulley. 8. Install components in reverse order of removal. 9. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [2] . Tightening torque: 170-180 Nm

7 is timing mark on cam,pin mark to top,hole in spoke below pin mark lines up with mark on head
6 is crank timing mark,pin mark on crank lines up with mark on block

1989 Isuzu pickup how to align timing marks on cam and crank?


The Isuzu is a strange animal-when you do the timing belt you set it with #1 TDC "BUT" the distributor is timed with TDC #4 I found this the hard way and finally had to buy a cd with the procedures on it. Send me an e-mail address and I will forward the associated pictures &

TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o’clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

old timing belt stretched

you only hand turn twice

get number one cyl up on compression stroke both vales closed piston to top of stroke

put the cam with the tooth out to align marks

try again

unless you are 180 deg out should be right
