Question about 1997 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

I have a 97 jeep wrangler 2.5 with auto trans. The last year I have replaced the up stream 02 sensor 7 times. The jeep will run fine for a month or so then the check engine light will come on. Its always the same code, system to lean. The jeep will miss, and the smell of raw fuel is really bad. After several trips to the shop all the fuel related sensors have been changed, and no vaccum leaks have been found. Any ideas, or should i just trade the jeep for a Kia

My used 97 jeep wrangler fuel / economy problems: My vacuum canister was completely full with crud (replace). also my coolant temp sensor was bad (twice replaced), effects fuel mixture. and O2 sensors were bad (effect fuel mixture) due to being fouled by spraying too much oil on spector air filter (now wipe off excess and let dry in sun), also carb cleaner appeared to foul O2 sensors (stopped using). Also sensor input/output signals were constantly being interrupted by battery sliding into computer harness, which I cured by placing a 1" spacer on rear battery clamp to push battery away from computer. After curing these problems my fuel economy went from 55-60 miles per 1/4 tank to 75-80+ miles per 1/4 tank.

Dit you check the fuse? Jeeps many times ha e problems with Bosch sensors due to the slower heating. Best is to use Denso.

When was the last time the transmission fluid and filter changed? I would have that serviced first. If it is an electronic transmission, the line pressure might also have to be reset.

97 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L spratically won't start

Since you now mention the check engine light, when you go to buy a manual and meter, have the codes scanned...most of the larger parts stores do that free. There is a list of codes in the manual. That will point you in the right direction. Ignore any O2 sensor codes to start with though as often any other malfunction can change mixture and set that code. Always deal with that code last.

2004 or 05 Jeep Wrangler dtc P2096 (Post catalyst fuel trim bank 1 to lean). It set the mil lamp and then reset it self. Pulled the code with a scanner and found 1 of 2 to be P2096 and 2of 2 to be P2096...

Here is more information about P2096
P2096-DOWN STREAM FUEL TRIM LEAN BANK 1

WHEN MONITORED
With the engine running in closed loop mode, the ambient/battery temperature above (-7°C) 20°F , altitude below 8500 ft and fuel level greater than 15%.

SET CONDITION
If the PCM multiplies short term compensation by long term adaptive and a certain percentage is exceeded for two trips, a freeze frame is stored, the MIL illuminates and a trouble code is stored. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

Here are some possible casuses:
Exhaust leak
Engine mechanical problem
02 sensor
02 signal circut
02 return circut
Fuel contamination

Good luck and hope this helps.

Oil pan removal on a 97 jeep wrangler

Instructions can be found in any basic manual but the simple version is to remove anything obvious that will be in your way (starter, trans lines etc). Disconnect both engine mounts and raise engine to get better clearance (watch stuff on top so you don't break anything) I usually stuff a couple of 2x4 wood blocks between engine & mounts to support it. Remove all pan bolts and take it down (remember pump pickup will interfere) Do what you need to do, then reverse process.
