2002 Ford Focus strange starting problem

I have a 2002 Ford Focus that doesn't like to start every once in awhile. It usually starts up first thing in the morning but after a long drive or driving around for awhile it won't start.

When I crank the key everything comes on and I hear the starter click but the motor does not turn over. If you wait a few hours it will start back up. Sometimes you have to wait longer than usual. On one occasion it wouldn't start up for a whole day.

It doesn't seem to be a temperature problem because the problem persists in both cold and warm weather. I suppose it's possible though since it happens after the car has been running for awhile.

It's immediately after shutting the car off that it won't start as well. I've gotten into the habit of starting my car again right after I shut it off just to see if I'm going to have to wait awhile to start it again or if it will start right up.

I already took it to the shop and they replaced the battery and took out an old alarm system that they said messed with the ignition and that it was probably what was causing the problem.

Please for the love of god someone help me. I can't afford to fix the wrong thing and I need to be able to get around. My only other option is trading it in which I might do if I fix it anyways.

Verify battery condition by turning on headlights and seeing if they are bright. If ok, the theft system may be activated. Try locking and unlocking doors with the key fob. This will usually reset the theft deterent system.

Try getting the codes pulled at a car parts shop. Usually the computer will keep it in its history. It sounds like it is an ignition problem. If there is no stored code I would look at things in this order: spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor/coil. If none of these seem to be the problem you may have to take it to a shop. If it was just the start and idle problem I would say it is something with what I said but that high RPM thing seems strange.

From what you describe, it sounds like your alternator died. The battery's main function is to provide power to start the vehicle. Once started, the alternator takes over and provides the main source of power to the truck, and also recharges the battery.
When the alternator stops working, the car starts to run solely off the battery. It will work for a little while, but as the battery starts to lose power, strange things will happen with the electronics. The computers and other electronics that control the vehicle are very dependent on a constant, steady flow of voltage. When that voltage dips below 11 or 10 volts, the car may start to run badly or strange things may happen with electrical system.
When there was finally not enough power to keep the car running, it shut off. Of course, once this happens, there will not be enough power left to start the truck back up.

Ford Focus occasional starting problems.

Hey there...

Although I'm questioning why it would be doing this mostly on cold mornings, I would suggest that you check your battery connections. 99 times out of 100, the reason that this happens is because one of the battery cables does not have a good connection (Many times it's the ground wire). If you check to make sure that the connections on both ends of both cables are tight, then try taking your vehicle to your local parts store to have them do a load test on your battery. It's possible that the c.c.a. (cold cranking amps) are no longer sufficient to start your car. After awhile, batteries tend to lose their charge due to age, how many times it has been discharged completely, and also frequent cold weather. I believe that this should solve things, but feel free to contact me to ask about any other possibilities that may be causing this, as I'll look into any other similar common issues on your particular make and model. Should be battery cables or battery itself, though. Hope this helps and have a great day!
