If you drive it to much you will cause it to burn up, but to check the fluid level drive some to warm up( engine temp should be about half way (and you should reach 50mph) the park with it running(has to be running) and pull the tranny dipstick to check fluid level
if the trans and engine are cold it wont read the correct level

it will slip if the fluid is low

these cars have a major issue with torque converters.... the torque converter input splines are softer than the splines on the input shaft and it sheers the teeth off of the input side of the torque converter, i have replaced a ton of these for this problem... usually when you replace the torque converter every thing goes back to normal, what you need to do is check the fluid level while the engine is running, if the fluid level is really high than that is what happened because the torque converter failed and drained all the fluid into the pan... to fix it the transmission will have to come out and the torque converter will need replaced if you drain all the fluid out of it and look down into the center of the torque converter with a flash light you will see the splines missing...

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER BEEN CHANGED.MAKE SURE ENGINE FINE TUNED AND TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFT CABLE HAS BEEN ADJUSTED.OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES TRANSMISSION NOT SHIFT TO SECOND GEAR. YOU HAVE FAULTY STUCK 1 - 2 SHIFT SOLENOID. OR TORQUE CONVERTER SLIPPING NOT LOCKING UP DUE TO DAMAGED TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH VALVE OR TORQUE CONVERTER FAULTY.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Looks like that the problem will be on the torque converter. If the torque converter is faulty the gear tends to slip. I strongly suggest that you replace the transmission fluid and torque converter to resolve the problem. Once replaced a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF FLUID LEVEL OKAY BUT FLUID LOOKS DARK SMELL BURNT.CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER ADD SOME VALVE BODY TREATMENT TO LOOSEN STICKEN SHIFT VALVES.ADD TO TRANSMISSION FLUID DONT OVER FILL TRANSMISSION WILL CAUSE OVERHEAT. IF TRANSMISSION FLUID GOOD FILTER ALREADY BEEN CHANGED.IF ALL GOOD ENGINE BEEN TUNED UP OTHER POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR TRANSMISSION SLIPPING NOT GOING TO OVER DRIVE COULD BE THROTTLE SHIFT CABLE OUT ADJUSTMENT OR STRETCHED. TORQUE CONVERTER FAULTY OR SHIFT VALVES TO TORQUE CONVERTER OR OVER DRIVE STUCK IN VALVE BODY. VALVE BODY FAULTY. AND HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED FOR FAULTY VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR OR FAULTY THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE OR FAULTY THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. THEY WILL EFFECT TRANSMISSION SHIFT TO OVER DRIVE IF FAULTY.

I have a 96 s10 2.2 and the transmission is slipping when its in 4th gear i changed the fluid and filter and it helped but it came back any ideas

Hi! Replacing the fuel and filter was a good idea but I do believe that the transmission's torque converter is worn. The torque converter controls the up and down shifting of the car that if it's faulty the transmission can slip. Have it replaced and you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Trany slips out of over drive

on automatics the overdrive is actualy not in the trans at all
it's a small cluch in the torque converter and is not repairable, the only fix is to replace the torque converter, but then you say it races free as if not in drive?
That's a failure of the forward clutch

I'm afraid you need the trans overhaued, I recomend the dealership and NEVER places like Mr Transmission type, they'll overhaul it wihout any testing and cannot diagnose, just overhaul and overhaul ultil eother you're broke, or give up

In a 250 you most likely have either a C-6 (Aluminum case) or a FMX (Iron case) both are good transmissions and again the overdrive is the torque converter, be sure they replace it too

Good luck

Transmission doesn't stay in one gear

possible faults - *check the shifting cable selector is aligned with the neutral starting switch * check engine mounts *make sure the fluid level is between the marks on the dipstick running hot * overdrive friction and drive plates have worn out * the torque converter or oil pump has a problem *do a torque converter stall test hope you used only mitsubishi automatic oil when changed *check the throttle position sensor * temp sensor for the auto the TCU has faults or needs to be replaced
