Rear power windows will go down not up

The rear power windows on my RHD 100 Series will only operate when opening. Initially the problem was just the rear left (passenger) side. WHilst trying to find the fault, the right hand one stopped working. There are only 2 wires running to the motor (green & yellow). In the neutral position both wires are earthed. The motor works DOWN by supplying live DC current to the green wire (leaving the yellow are earth). To move the window UP, the current is applied to the yellow wire with the green providing earth. I have applied a meter to the wires and when I have all switches connected, attempting to raise the window I could see 12v on the yellow wire of the working window. On the one that wasn't working, I was only getting around 8v. In the DOWN position, both green wires would register 12v. Could this be a problem with the main control switch on the driver's door? Also, as the new switch is $440 AUD plus tax I'm hoping that maybe an 80 series switch will do the trick. Any ideas?

    I've a question for Robert regarding Solution #1. Surely if the relay was at fault, the Front Passenger window would be failing as well?

Locate the relay for the power windows likely under the dash on the fuse panel... replace it.

    only way to confirm that is to locate the relay for the windows and see whether there is only one. does the rear windows work if you use the other door switches ?.... and if it cost that much to replace it... go to a junk/wrecking/recycling yard and buy one.

    P.S. you may find it's cheaper to buy a whole door with power windows and take out the switch... then to just buy the switch

Its the problem of control switch module in the drivers side and needs replacement to make it proper.

Power Windows Operation
The vehicle is equipped with power windows controlled by the door modules. Each passenger door window can be operated, either from a switch built into the driver door switch assembly (DDSA), or from a switch mounted locally to its associated door. The driver door window can be operated only from the driver door window switch built into the DDSA.
When a window is operated from the DDSA, the DDSA interprets the window switch signal as a specific window switch request and sends the information to the driver door module (DDM) via the power door serial data circuit. The DDM examines the request and checks to see if it has received any class 2 serial data messages from any of the other vehicle modules (i.e. ignition switch position) prohibiting the movement of the window. If the window being operated is the driver door window, and if no prohibitive class 2 messages have been received, the DDM then applies voltage and ground to the driver door window motor to move the window glass as requested. If the window being operated is a passenger door window, and no prohibitive class 2 messages have been received, the DDM sends the request, via the power door serial data circuit, to the appropriate passenger door module. The passenger door module then applies voltage and ground to the passenger door window motor to move the window glass as requested.
When a passenger door window is operated from the power window switch mounted locally to its associated door, the passenger door module first checks to see if the DDM has received any prohibitive class 2 serial data messages. If there are no prohibitive messages, the passenger door module powers the associated passenger door window motor.
Both front door windows have the express down feature. This allows the front door windows to be fully opened by momentarily pulling the appropriate window switch lever to the second detente and then releasing.

Which window switch ? RT DOOR CB-circuit breaker , do you know what a circuit breaker is ? 25A (System power for right rear window)

GENERAL PROCEDURES Rear Window Motor Initialization s1r~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Make sure that no obstructions are present in the power rear window system when carrying out this procedure.
NOTE: This procedure must be carried out when repairs are performed on any part of the power rear window system including when: the power rear window motor is removed from the window regulator drum housing, a new power rear motor is installed, a new power rear window regulator is installed, a new power rear window module is installed, and any operation in which grease or lubricants are applied to the power rear window system.
NOTE: All power rear window components (window glass module, window regulator, window motor, and glass runs) must be installed and torqued to specification before carrying out this procedure.
NOTE: Steps 1-6 must be completed within 30 seconds. The entire procedure must be completed within five minutes.
NOTE: Once the ignition key is turned to the ON position in Step 6, it must remain on until the entire procedure is completed.
NOTE: Steps 7 and 9 require that the power rear window control switch be held in the closed position until the power rear window motor stalls the window in the upper header seal. Step 8 requires that the window control switch be momentarily turned to the open position.
  1. Start with the ignition in the OFF position.
  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.

Where is the rear window relay located on the 2002 Ford Explorer sport trac. Not the rear door windows but the very back window.


  • The power rear window is inoperative (Explorer Sport Trac only)
  • Circuitry.
  • Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 3 (30A).
  • Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 20 (7.5A).
  • Power rear window control switch.
  • Rear window glass motor.

NOTE: The power rear window motor is not on the multiplex link. Any diagnosis and testing carried out on the power rear window will not involve the GEM module. NOTE: The reinitialization procedure must be carried out when repairs are performed on any part of the power rear window system including when the power rear window motor is removed from the window regulator drum housing, a new power rear motor is installed, a new power rear window regulator is installed, a new power rear window module is installed, and any operation in which grease or lubricants are applied to the power rear window system.

I am having a problem with both my rear windows on my 98 528 sedan. Two days ago the right rear came down for my wife and then would not go back up. In trying to figure out the problem I accidently...


Taking the door panel off and checking the regulator would be a quick way to determine if it's electrical or mechanical. Post again if you need some direction on removing your door panel. It's a about a $100 and an hour of labor to replace a window regulator.

The dash switch can affect the operation of the rear key switch. 1st thing to do is replace the dash switch and that will prob fix it all.

This may be just a case of inadvertently hitting the window lock out n th driver door window switch by mistake. Check that first. Here's some background on window operation

Principles of Operation
The driver power window regulator motor is controlled directly by the master window/door lock/unlock switch (and its integrated "auto down" module). Power is supplied to the power window relay and the master window/door lock/unlock switch, and the passenger power window switch when the SEC/timer module grounds the coil side of the power window relay. The SEC/timer module will ground this relay when the ignition is in the ON position and will remain energized for approximately 15 minutes or until the driver or passenger door is opened.
The driver power window regulator motor is a reversible motor that is operated by applying power and ground to the motor leads to lower the window, and then reversing polarity on those leads to raise the window.
The passenger power window regulator motor is controlled directly by the passenger power window switch and can also be controlled by the master window/door lock/unlock switch. Power is supplied to the power window relay and the master window/door lock/unlock switch, and the passenger power window switch when the SEC/timer module grounds the coil side of the power window relay. The SEC/timer module will ground this relay when the ignition is in the ON position and will remain energized for approximately 15 minutes or until the driver or passenger door is opened.
The passenger power window regulator motor is a reversible motor, which is operated by applying power and ground to the motor leads to lower the window, and then reversing polarity on those leads to raise the window.
The power rear quarter glass is also directly controlled by the master window/door lock/unlock switch. The power rear quarter glass power latches also utilize reversible motors.
