Question about 1998 Toyota Tacoma

Battery light and ABS light

When the battery light comes on, it is only for a moment and my dashboard and headlights get brighter, then the light goes off and all is good. But, at the same time that the battery light comes on, the ABS light comes and stays on even after the battery light goes off. I have had the battery AND alternator tested by O'reilly (Battery tested bad, Alt tested good). Went to Walmart, where I bought the battery and had both tested again (BOTH tested good). Replaced the terminal connectors and I am still having the same issue. Any solutions?

Hi there:
First things first, you'll need to find out the output voltage from the alternator. To do this, get a voltmeter and measure the voltage @ the batterywith the vehicle running. The measured voltage should be between 13.5 - 14.5V w/ the headlights and defroster on. The ABS light coming on may very be related to the battery voltage being low, but as said, you should find out the battery voltage first.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS, TPMS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

Legend of Abbreviations. ABS Anti-lock brake system. TCS Traction control system, TCM Transmission control module, SRS Supplemental restraint system, BCM Body control module. TPMS Tire Pressure Monitor System

SOURCE: battery discharge intermittently with brake light coming on too

Check all wiring connections to alternator and battery to insure all are good, if ok it will most likely need an alternator.

SOURCE: battery warning light, handbrake light going on and off

You could have a alternator problem. When the alternator stops charging the battery you are running on just the battery. When the battery gets weak a lot of weird things starts happening. Have your alternator tested.

SOURCE: Car is dead but battery is good

You should YES check all Grounds Around Battery B U T Also there are AUX Power Cables that go to the Battery Chase them to see that they have NO corrosion or Breaks. It Sounds as though you have a SIMPLE No Power to Accessories type problem.

check output of the alternator as there may not be enough current produced to keep the battery charged. Check drive belt tension and condition.

Dashboard lights and gauges go out, windows won't work

Your alternator is out. Those are classic symptoms of alternating going out. The alternator recharges your electrical system and when it goes out a list of strange things go on inside the dash, and you won't be able to go very far on just a battery. I'm glad you at least made it home. But yes you will need a new alternator for sure. Please rate this response so I can get my ratings back up to 90% at least.

Hi do you have any power at all ie when you turn the ignition on do you get all the dashboard lights light up as normal and can you use the headlights etc if you can are the lights bright or not.

If you have no power at all then the chances are the battery needs replacing or it could even be that the alternater needs replacing and then your battery has run flat.

The best thing to do is either charge your battery up and then try your car again if it starts up as normal but their is a picture of the battery lit up on the dashboard then this indicates that the alternater needs replacing.

If after charging the battery you still have no power at all then this would indicate that the leads coming from the battery are loose or not connected at all.

The main problem with the leads from the battery is with the earth leads one should go to the body work you will need to undo this and check that this is not corroded where it touches the body work you can use sand paper to remove any corrosion
The other earth lead connects to the engine check this is still connected and free from corrosion.

Check also the possitive lead from the battery that goes to the starter motor check this is still connected also as this is the main lead from the battery.

You could try using jump leads from someone elses car onto your battery this way if you still had no power it would then 100% be the leads at fault.

If after connecting the jump leads you thne have power and can then start the car this would then indicate that either the battery is at fault or the alternater the way to test this would be when the car is running at night time park up agains a wall about 10 feet away with the head lights on full beam facing the wall no when you rev the engine up the lights should shine slightly brighter then when you stop revving it should go slightly dim if it does this then the alternater is ok and the battery needs replacing.

If the lights dont go any brighter then this suggests that the alternater needs replacing.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

What you want to do is go to an auto parts store and get a current tester.
You put it in line with your battery and keep removing fuses until the light goes out, then find out what components are on the circuit with the fuse.
Often times its a glove comparment lamp or trunk light.
Something that is trickle discharging .
