Swop the wiper relay in the engine fuse box for a different relay of the same type, the relays sometimes become "tired" with bad contacts and can cause this problem.

On the top of the motor there is a circular dome
type cover. It's held in place by about 5 or 6 clips, the same as
the one's that are on the air filter housing but, smaller. Once
the cover is off, spray the underside of it and what it was
covering with electrical contact cleaner. also try this,
the 48 way connector in the left hand footwell ( right
down in the left hand front corner). The windscreen wiper motor
control passes through this connector along with ABS and lighting
for the LH side of the car. The pins on the connector had become
corroded, water can seep through from the wheel
arch, clean the contacts with very fine wet and dry paper (1500
grit) superglued to the end of a small pair of tweezers and then
sprayed to contacts with switch cleaner.
