Check spark plugs, maybe you got condensation in the wiring! also put the pedal to the floor and try turning the key (make sure car is in park ), almost like flooding the engine kinda! hope this helps , also u can buy an after market block heater! the mazda proteges are known for simple problems, but steady on prices!!

For 2003 Mazda Protege ES model 2.0L 4cyl engine; engine running rough and ''shaking at idle'' when stopped on road for traffic light for example. Also becomming hard to start. Someone mentioned a ''cold...

Check the air inlet boot going from the air filter to the intake for rips or holes. If rips exist, this would allow air to bypass the filter and mass air flow sensor and will lead to a check engine light appearing. The code would read "too lean, bank 1." If this problem is allowed to continue for long periods of time, the EGR ports will have to be cleaned out and maybe even the intake.

2003 mazda protege. 110,000 miles. Runs great except that it has developed a low and rough idle over the past couple of months. I hear it is supposed to idle at 900 rpm, but it idles now at 650-750 rpm...

I had the same issue except my car is a 2002 it is your idle control valve which cost anywhere from 174.00-500.00 depending where you buy the part. try www.partgeeks.com i had my car checked out at madza and my husband is a mechanic between to two i have no doubts. Good luck.

97 Mazda Protege won't start in winter

Theresa,

Plug in your car and listen for a "sizzle" sound. If you hear this then your block heater works.... if not..... Call Canadian Tire!
