SOURCE: Bleeding clutch slave cylinder

if you loosten the slave bleeder screw and push in the clutch pedal fluid should come out if not make sure someone holds down the pedal and tighten the screw then pump the clutch a few times and hold the pedal and open the screw if no fluid repeat a couple of times if still no fluid you need either a new master cylinder or just rebuild it( normally cheaper) and if you rebuild it make sure you flush all the lines of debris

I understand these cars have a sealed clutch system. When they fail you replace the whole kit master,hydrolic pipe and slave (comes in one piece). Search on ebay maybe £45 or so.

SOURCE: put in new clutch and slave cylinder. no clutch pedal. how do you bleed the cylinder?

work it back and forth with your hand and you will get pedal after a while then bleed like you would brakes get help so one can pump and the other can bleed

SOURCE: leaking clutch fluid Where is the slave cylinder"..I have been told to look at the slave cylinder because I do not see fluid under the car.

Slave cylinder should be on the left side of the bellhousing (follow the line from the clutch master if necessary) If you don't see fluid but you have lost some, also check where the rod from the pedal goes through the firewall to the master...they often leak there and will not drip on the ground.

SOURCE: after replacing starter and removing slave cylinder, clutch fails to work

sounds like you have a air pocket or you fail to engage the slave cylinder push rod If you disconnected the slave cylinder from the hose proceed to bleed out the slave cylinder if you didn't take you slave cylinder and whit out disconnecting the hose and make sure the push rod is against the clutch push arm.

Can not bleed clutch on 1987 GMC 2500


There is still air in the system. Try bleeding the m/cyl first by removing the line to the slave cyl and while holding you finger over the opening have someone gently operate the pedal. When you get good fluid past your finger reconnect the line then bleed the slave cyl. as normal.

If your clutch is hydraulic uses a master cyl. and a slave cyl. It sounds like the slave cyl. but could be both.

Why does clutch leak off and wont go into gear 96 toyota tacoma when you push on clutch pedal goes to the floor it wont engage clutch to be able to put into gear


the most likely reason is either the clutch master cyl. needs to be replaced.or the.slave cyl. its mounted down on the transmation under the hood find the resivore for the clutch. check the fluid level.if its low , fill it back up , and look for signs of a leak
you will probally have to bleed out all of the air from the system.its done almost the same way as bleeding the brakes. Good Luck.

Clutch suddenly has no resistance and car won't shift gears. Fluids were low, have put fluid in the reservoir but still doesn't work. How do you bleed a clutch line?


on the transmission there is a slave cylinder that works like a brake cylinder, when you apply pressure to the clutch pedal a rod inside the vehicle under the dash pushes into a clutch master cylinder, (almost like a brake master cylinder without the reservoir, as the clutch master cylinder works off the brake master cylinders reservoir) the plunger in the clutch master cylinder applies fluid pressure to the slave cylinder,(located down on the trans near the clutch fork assembly) which projects a piston rod into the clutch fork dis-engaging the clutch. To bleed the clutch slave cylinder locate the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder,break loose so it loosens and tightens easily. Check fluid in brake master cylinder reservoir,fill if needed, while bleeder on the slave cyl is closed have a helper push clutch pedal to floor and back 7-8 times, (At first the clutch might stay at the floor, just pull it up by hand or foot and continue) after several pumps with no rest time push pedal to the floor and hold down with foot pressure, at this time loosen the bleeder on slave untill fluid leaks out, watch for air bubbles, close bleeder and repeat untill there is no sign of air bubbles, (make sure to check fluid in the brake master cylinder and keep fill as needed, do not let fluid get less than 1/2 empty as it might **** air and you will have to start over) If this does not bring clutch to operate then you need to check if slave cylinder is reachig its full extension of push rod or not. If it is not then you will have to replace the clutch master cyl or the clutch slave cyl or both as seals are bad and wont hold pressure. Or you need to inspect the clutch fork,the throw-out bearing, or the pressure plate fingers and clutch plate for failure or broken bent parts. I hope it turns out to be a easy fix on that clutching thing.

If you have bled the system, you are down to either having a bad clutch master cylinder, or a bad clutch slave cylinder. You could eliminate the slave cylinder by removing the line and capping it off, and if you have a firm pressure on the clutch pedal ( don;'t try to push it down, just check for pressure!) then your slave cylinder is bad. If you cap off the line, and bleed the system, and the pedal still has no pressure, then your clutch master cylinder is bad!

Changed clutch but unable to bleed the slave cylinder. Does that mean clutch master cylinder is bad? Got one from parts store but can't figure out how to take the clutch safty switch off to change it. Any...


Probably not. Bleeding clutch slave cylinders is tricky because you cant "pump it up". The master cylinder has no static valve so the best way to bleed the slave cyl. is to use gravity. Fill the master cylinder reservoir and open the bleed valve on the slave cyl. Allow fluid to drip into an open can until there's no trace of air. Close bleed valve and try clutch. If still no pedal, repeat the process. This is quite an acceptable procedure.

The master is beside the brake master cylinder, between the brake cylinder and the fender. Follow the line down to the trans, it ends at the slave. Now that you know where they are... why do you want to know??

If you've not done anything to your truck, check the Clutch master cylinder under the hood, there is a resivoir that should have brake fluid in it. It usually sits next to the Brake master cylinder & is a smaller unit. If nothing has been done to the system recently, and your fluid is full, either the Clutch Master Cyl. or the Clutch Slave Cy. mounted on the bellhousing of the trans. is defective, or has a leaking connection.

If leaking connection, tighten & bleed the system. Check under the clutch pedal on the floorboard for brake fluid, if you find it, the Clutch Master Cyl is the problem & will need ot be replaced. Otherwise, the Clutch Slave Cyl. will need to be replaced. System has to be bled after replacing either & the Clutch Master Cyl. must be bled before hooking up the lines to the Clutch Slave Cyl.

1992 Nissan Pathfinder SE: replace master/slave clutch cylinders


Removing and replacing is straight forward mechanic work.Here is a gotcha that very few manuals will tell you,but years of experience will teach you.Go ahead and install the clutch slave cylinder on the bellhousing of the trans.The clutch master cylinder needs to be "bench bled" so that as much air as possible is gone from the master cylinder before installed on the vehicle.This requires a helper.Take master cyl. to a bench and set it down while holding the assembly in your hands.Fill the reeservoir with brake fluid.I wear latex or nitrile gloves while i work to keep my hands clean.This helps in sealing off the output fluid port during this procedure.Have your assistant take a phillips head screwdriver and push the piston in,on the master cyl and hold it in the depressed position.Some fluid and air will shoot out the output port.Now take your latex glove clad finger,and press it firmly over the fluid output hole.Now release the screwdriver.Remove finger from hole,and stroke the piston in with the screwdriver and hold it at it's depressed position.Place finger over the hole.Add fluid to the reservoir.Keep repeating until only solid fluid exits the output hole.This is bench bleeding.Now install into vehicle being careful to not get brake fluid on the paint.After installing,on the clutch master cylinder rod...there is a jam nut,either 12 mm or 14 mm.Loosen this nut and back it off.Now,the threaded rod can be spun in,or out,making the rod shorter or longer.this is how you adjust the clutch pedal engagement point,after installation.Back to the clutch master and slave,they obviously need to be bled after installation,with the bleeder valve down on the slave cylinder.Good luck.
