SOURCE: gauge lights and tail lights

Hi ...... the brake pedal circuit is 'live' even when the ignition is switched off. Its sounds like you have a 'short' between the brake circuits and the rest, my guess would be at the back of the car. Have you had any work done lately ? Or heavy object in the boot/trunk ? Check ither side of the boot/trunk (behind or near rear lights) for chaffed, broken or melted wires. Make up a simple bulb testing lamp, one 12v bulb with a wire on positive and one on negative and place these wires into/on the wires going to your rear lights (neg' to earth) ......... this will tell you if the circuit has power going to it and by going back along the route you'll pinpoint the damaged or problem area. First step is to make sure both rear light clusters have good earthing points.
Let us know how you get on.

There is a switch on the brake pedal, stick your head under the dash and follow the brake pedal up, you should see the switch pressed against a bracket, unplug the wires, one goes to the lights and the other should be live when the ignition is on, bridge the wires if the lights comes on then it needs a new switch, if there is power there and they still don't come on, check the bulbs?

Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

An electrical switch located on the upper side of the brake pedal arm. It has voltage going to it, and when you depress the brake pedal, the switch closes and let the voltage go to the brake lights. (These switches are adjustable)

Rear window break light

You either have a 'single filament' bulb installed in a 'dual filament' brake lamp socket ... OR .. you have a 'dual filament' bulb short circuited internally. Check your rear brake lamp bulbs (supposed to be 'dual filament' - two contacts on their bottoms). When you step on the brake pedal, do your dash lights LIGHT UP? A 'cross circuit' exists between brake lamp circuit and parking lamps circuit.

You have a bad ground somwhere. You need to check and look for broken wires or corroded connections. A good manual with a wiring diagram helps with this.
