Make sure the brake lights work first. The park lock system has to receive a signal from the brake lights before it will release the lock to allow you to shift out of park.

That 87 astro van has a 2.5 & have replaced tps.

If it won't move when you put it in gear, maybe a transmission/transaxle problem? You can check the linkages. You don't want to shift anything with you outside the vehicle. When testing make sure parking brake is set and a helper is in there with their foot on the brake. Safety is your responsibility.

I have a 1998 mazda MPV Van. It wont come out of park. What must I do to get it in drive? Starts fine but lever is being held . Thanks so much! Keith

it may have a brake safety switch that is required to operate before the gear lever is released
put your foot on the brake to move the selector lever and if that doesn't work check the circuit for fuses or switch problems

Will a worn out motor mount make the van idle rough or vibrate the car?

Have somebody stand in front of van with the hood open and watch the motor while you start the van.Put the emergency brake on and your foot on the brake, shift into D keeping your foot on the brake with your other foot give the engine a little gas and watch the motor. If a motor mount is broke the motor will lift up a little on the broken side.Be careful!

When putting van in gear the engine runs rough

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.

Van was in low gear, when we tried to take it out it stuck and then finally the shifter moved but it was still in low.

Start vehicle put your foot on the BRAKE and put vehicle in NEUTRAL, with foot still on brake move vehicle out of low gear. Good Luck. If this works leave me a FIX-YA comment. Thanks

Gear stick gets stuck

Check to see if the brake lights are working. If not, it is very likely that the brake switch has pitted or burned contacts. This circuit also controls the solenoid in the steering column to relase the gear shift. It is a safety feature so you (or a child) can't put the van in gear w/o having your foot on the brake. Look up under the dash and you can see the white/black switch and its plug attached just in front of the brake pedal lever. The switch simply twists out and unplugs. Note the depth of the switch by marking it with a pencil so that when you replace it, you maintain the same distance (too close and it won't be able to open; too far away and it won't be able to close properly).

It is a very cheap part and easy to replace. BTW the switch itself pops apart and can be made to work temporarily by using an emory board or sandpaper to clean the metal contacts. ALSO if this isn't your particular problem, you can use a small screwdriver to pop open the little plastic insert on the top of the steering column near the gear shift. Push down on the inner piece to manually release the solenoid and get the van in gear.

Hope this helps.
